Arrow Upgrading the Vortech Intercooler

I have seen a few pics of the vortech intercooler, and it is very small compared to the greddy and pro charger intercooler.

Could one upgrade the intercooler?

What would the pros and cons be, by doing this.

I know the greddy intercooler requires a diffrent location of the air bag sensor in the front bumper but, if i were to go with a larger intercooler that came with the vortech would that be beneficial?

Thanks
Jordan

I have thought about this but since it was designed as part of the system, why would you need to?

i was thinking maby just to increase cooling if i were to ever increase boost with a new pully, also i think it just looks beter.

sure it would look better ... but in the case of the G35c ... you would be better off with a JWT TT style dual intercooler setup, both performance and looks

a bigger FMIC would offer less boost (not much, but some, i have read), and possibly increase creep (again, per readings)

i think the best thing to do is to have an open passageway to it, to maximize effeciency of it...

bigger aint better in this case...

(although a big dual inlet honker looks the part!!, IMO)

A bigger I/C will only be necessary (or help) if you increase boost presssure from the standard 8PSI kit. I have heard the guys producing 9+ PSI are producing less effiecint boost, meaning the amount of HP per PSI actually goes down. For example on the ATI kit each PSI represents roughly 20rwhp. With the vortech kit it is closer to 15rwhp and as you go over 9 PSI it goes closer to 10rwhp per PSI.

I agree with JRITT, a different bumper or jwt IC setup would be perfect for the G35.

whosdady-

who told you this about the less efficient boost??

this sounds very specifically aimed at the 9+ vortech guys, so im wondering which (of us) has determined this, and relayed it to you.

i also couldnt find any real world data (user dyno's)to substantiate your "for example" math showing ati to be dominant (surprise ) over vortech...

it looks like one pound of boost (per your advertisement) nets a RWlb-ft TQ gain of 45 for you..... somehow, i find that to be too good to be true... i guess if you dont pull timing out, you can acheive any numbers... but the longevity of this , well, i dont wanna make any guesses there...

that said, my vortech expereinces have NOT shown less efficient boost, but rather MUCH better midrange gains and a marginal upper gain too (netted ~20rwhp on my 333 to 312 swapout)....

If you understand why we have IC's on FI cars, then you would understand that at a certain point an IC becomes too small for the application. (compressor puts out air, it is hot, the IC cools it down and enhances the efficiency of the compressor) In the case of voertech, the IC is too small for the compressor at 9+ lbs of boost. The result is less efficiency and thus less HP.

I learned this from someone that tested both the ATI IC and the vortech IC. Yes timing does have something to do with this. But for the most part ATI is able to provide more efficent HP for two reasons. 1) Higher impeller redline: It doesn't work as hard 2: The IC is bigger and is able to keep the air cooler: more efficient.
