Default just wondering, how will you all pass smog with turbo in the future?

i don't think there's a carb legal turbo kit out at this time or is greddy carb legal? i'm sure most of you aren't legal with different setups. So how are you guys going to pass smog with all these mods like the aeromotive FPR with the return line, turbo , etc etc

I used to have a turbo accord and i had to take everything off for smog when the time came.. but this is a different story since it's way too hard to work on the g35/350z without spending a lot of time.

just wondering. thanks

I understand that here in CA a new car doesn'thave to have smog test for 5 yrs. APS has or will be applying for CARB approval once they import their kits to he U.S. Hopefully, they will have CARB approval before the 5 yr. exemption is up. It's a gamble but I'm willing to move to a different state with less stringent air pollution control requirements if need be.

Very true zcool. Since the smog checks have gotten a little stricter (with dynos) it will be a lot harder to pass smog with those running FI. However if u can find someone to do it some illegal way then it will be worth it. I have friends who pay up to $300 for someone to pass the smog check illegally. I was talkling to a smog tech when i took my F-150 to get smogged and asked him how difficult it would be to do it illegally.
The tech said that with the new machines and the dyno , it would very hard to by pass through the system. However he told me that if u can get an exact same car as the one i own, they can use that as the tester but with all of my info. For example, if i knew my car coulndt pass smog then all i have to do is find a stock 350Z, use that car to do the smog test but with all my information. He said its possible. So i might be doing this whne its time for my smog check. Just have to find someone who will do this favor for me. Plus they will get some $$$$ for helping me out.

Just because a company is selling in the US doesn't mean they will automatically try for CARB. Its apparently expensive and difficult, and many companies shoose not to deal with it.

I mentioned to someone that is in the know that Gready wasn't on my short list because they wern't trying for CARB, and he said not to count them out yet. Its not a ringing endorsement, but it does leave the door open.

I know that JWT will be releasing their kit at the end of this year, and they are definatly going for CARB approval. For that reason (and because JWT is about 20 miles from my house), they are at the top of my list.

At this point, I wouldn't consider a mod of any kind that requires and doesn't have CARB approval. Its just too much of a hassle otherwise. Hear that vendors? Hint, Hint.

Default TT seeking CARB EO

Of the main TT kits availible or soon to be released (none have an EO# yet) : If I were to bet, JWT will prolly get an EO# first:

a) Greddy : kind of luke warmly claimed to be seeking EO#.

b) PE : has no plans to pursue an EO#

c) JWT : definately seeking EO#

d) APS: Peter has claimed to be seeking EO# soon. Given how effectively he contributes to this forum , I tend to beleive him.

Now a word about the emiissons testing.
WRT the "dyno" test performed in Ca., the test is run at low speed and light throttle, hence an "off-boost. " condtion . There is no reason to expect that an adeqautely designed TT kit would fail due to the new "dyno" test.

One of the tough areas with a TT kit and Emissions is the CAT ligth up time. Kits with SS exhaust manifolds have a harder time than CAST manifolds at passig this part, due to ineeficent heat trannfer to the CATs. Note Greddy, JST, and APS all use "cast" manifolds. PE does not.

Dont they check the vin #'s?????

In colorado we have 4 years till smog so i would hope it was carb approved by then or i guess i would just deal with it when the time comes.

What you do (illegal) is you find a place that will run another car twice and use its information as yours to pass. I had to do this with my truck due to the tint, no cats, and how low it was lowerred. So when it does come time to smog my car I will do the same. Usually it is easier to find a privately owned shop that does do emmissions. Larger companies are less likely to do it. What a place may charge will vary. I have paid as much as 30 above the regular price or as little as 10. Depends on where you go.

Unfortunately in colorado the smog stations are state run and the only way you can go to a local shop for smog i believe if its an 89 or older....

Default Emissions testing

Most states have special dispensation for extremely rural locations. I know a few people in Ca. who have PO boxes in BF egypt and register their cars there, to get around CARB.
