Default root cause

  • The 2005 Anniversary / Track Z is most likely going to come with stronger con rods.
getting to a root cause of many of the bent/broken rod scenarios is pretty important even for those re-building with forged internals. If (pure conjecture) at this point there is a pre-ignition issue , forged rods can also be readily bent or broken. The only real solution to pre-ignition (if it is discovered) is elimination of the the root cause.

EGTs that low (in the manifold) would be sign of a LOT of ignition timing (advance) combined with a LOT of fuel (rich as hell) and probably some high octane fuel as well??
I was about to say the same thing. Those EGT's are strange. You must have your thermocouple in the downpipe. My Z runs at about 700*-750*C in 6th on the freeway, under boost it stays at about 700*C due to the fuel enrichment.

My eclipse runs at 1600*F @ 25 psi on a biiiig turbo. 1600*F is about 870*C!

Default TSB

FYI, check to see if your VIN falls under the Infiniti Crank sensor TSB. It oculd cause intermittent operation and maybe even pre-ignition.

Pre-ignition would almost instantly destory a motor even without F/I. I guess that is where I am confused. I don't see N/A motors blowing up. Maybe the high cylinder pressure has something to do with confusing this sensor???

Gurgen,

Do you fall under this recall and if so, have you had it performed yet?

yeah... I did

And I took care of the TSB (crank and cam position sensors) almost as soon as it came out

More pressure = more heat
more heat = more likely to pre-ignite

If the engine was run at it's highest output for a few seconds too long with extremely high pressure, it could've heated the spark plug to glow plug status and pre-ignited.

Will have pics of the damage soon (spark plugs, pistons, etc)?

I understand that. But what we're talking about is the potential for a faulty or defective sensor....not the normal progression of pre-ignition.

Definately possible. He already had the recall done, but Nissan has had problems in the past of letting defective parts get out into inventory as well. On my old spec v, I had the fuel sending unit replaced due to hard starts. I still had the same problem, the tech said that the FSU was bad. So they replaced my defective part with a defective part (3rd FSU worked great, no more probs).
