Default Vortech Belts again

Started the car up this Sat AM....im getting a very loud screeching noise right when the car starts....and then all of a sudden, it will just stop. I just put on a new belt that I got from Napa, the fitment was perfect. Dont order your belts from Vortech at $65 when u can get it for 30-40 at Napa. Anyways, can anyone tell me for sure whats making the noise. It sounds like my pulleys but im not sure.

Have you re-tightened the belt since you installed it? Also, what size belt did you get?

teh215,

my belt is tight and i believe it is 94 inch belt, from napa. Just turned the car on again, its definitely the pulleys. Either one or two screech real loud and then it goes away. Could it be the pulley bearings? anything else?

If it only does it on start up and goes away....its not tight enough . The belts will stretch for a few weeks . Just keep tightening them and make sure you can only turn it to a 90 degree angle . And even then turn 90 degree's pretty hard

Every belt will stretch when they're as long as ours are. I went through 3 Gatorbacks (that stretched so much I had to replace them when I got the tensioner all the way up and the belt still wasn't tight enough) before I switched to a Gates, and now I'm finally rid of the aweful screaching and belt slipping.

Thats what I went with [Gates] after the first stretch and adjust...its good for awhile . The cog belt is a Gates...dont know why they didnt go with a gates for the serp belt

Vortech Belt Slip/noise Solution-Fix

I have corrected the problems with the Vortech Drive Belt and Pulleys.

It works Great. No Belt or pulley noise. The Belt no longer has to be so tight that is stretches.

1. Machine the Stock Fixed Idler Pulley (for flat side of Belt)

2. Purchase a 12mm x 110mm Hex Head Bolt and machine (or grind) the Head Hight down to about .200 in.

3. Purchase a 92-1/8 long V-Belt Gates # 060915 (for 2.87 Dia Pulley or a Delta 060923 (for 3.31 dia Pulley)

4. Remove the Vortech middle Idler Pulley.

5. Route the Belt around the Crank, under and around the the Fix Idler to the Blower, over the top Idler, under the lower Idler to the power steering pump, around the Alt and over the Adj Idler.

Pictures will be posted tonight.
