Default Why so tough to get a Skyline.....

So why is it so tough to get a skyline to the US(Hawaii for that matter) from Japan? I know nothing about them only that they have an incredible motor and there seems to be a mystic around them in the US. Are they super expensive or something? What's the dealio with them?

the new Skyline you can get....it is called a g35 and produced by Infiniti

the old skyline was a cost issue...it was not cost effective to switch the production line over to a left hand drive from right hand drive is the best I can understand. They apparently underestimated the sports car market in the US (which was down and SUVs was up back when the economy was soaring)...so they did not try to keep importing the the US a huge option as they built.

that may be way off, but that is how I have understood it and had it been explained to me

I was under the impression that if the Skyline is imported into the United States it has to be legal. That is, before it is allowed to even leave the importer. Unless you know of some other place to get them besides the importers that everyone uses (like Motorex) then I don't see how you could get past legalizing it. That is the reason the cars are so expensive to begin with. If you look at foreign classifieds, you will see many skylines and other supercars going for extremely cheap prices. The reason they are so expensive here is because 1. the price to import it, and 2. the price to add all of the "safety" equipment to it. All of that is included in the price of the car automatically.

I think you can only import a used car from other country so you don't have to pass the crash test. But the car has to be modified to meet DOT requirement.

Well, with about $60,000 you can get a R32 GT-R here. Already converted to US's DOT and EPA specifications. Making it legal to own and drive. Looky here

*** motorex! bastards raise price on their cars sooo much. stupid emissions and all that crap. the reason skylines arent runnin amok here is cause they dont pass emissions and the only place u can legalize them is motorex and they rape u price wise. 90 grand for an r34 gtr that costs less than half in japan! thats crazy. stupid u.s. ! ive seen r33 gtr's on ebay for 36 grand that are already in the states tho. but i dont think they are dot legal either so u still need to cough up another 20 or so grand. its ridiculous. wish tehre was an easier way. id have an s15 or a r32 :-D

yea thats tru. the worst state is def cali. thank god we dont have ne more emissions test here. but i still wouldnt kno how to get a car through the port without them making me make it DOT legal. the only way for them to allow you to keep it stock is for it to be race use. but for only race use is wat they say. so if u get caught usin it on the street ur proally infor a hell of a fine.

but motorex does have ridiculously high prices for a car that cost much less in JPN.

supply and demand
they are the supply so they can get whatever they want
unless one fo the other companies starting to sell them gets me a good price (RBmotoring is a great bunch of guys and even though motorex legalizes RBs cars RB still has better pricing streetlegalskylines.com ) im going to japan myself with a friend that speaks japanease and buying it there. im getting at least an R33 i know i can afford that, but if i get a good deal on an R34 or i come into some money its R34 time.

This my friend is called "Niche" market. Free enterprise at this best. Motorex had the ***** and the Cash to crash who knows how many skylines for the Feds. Now the Niche is that if people want a skyline they will have to pay for some of the cost of crash tests, safety modification and all the paper work that comes with it.
