hi,

i have an ingen CAI on my G35 6speed coupe and went through a run off, a deep one in PA on tuesday, and it sucked up water into my motor. I was in 2nd going up a hill... It happened that I was around an infiniti dealership and the service manager had it towed to his shop. The shop said I need a new motor - $7500 + $4000 in labor. Is it possible that I need a new motor. It does not crank and they ruled out plugs. Could it be the coil or MAF? They also said it can't be rebuilt. Does anyone know a good rebuild shop that does G35 around NY,NJ or PA? and if I go that route, is it worth it to upgrade to performace parts?

Does any know where is the best place to get a VQ35 motor?

How would I know the engine is hosed and take the dealer's word for it?

any help would be great

If you sucked in water you probably have bent valves and rods. I've seen it happen many times before to friends with their CAI's.

this is why you NEVER install a cold air intake on a car.

One of my friends just got a brand new WRX and yesterday he was parked at work. The flooding got so bad that the water was up to his car doors and his whole interior got soaked. We had to strip the whole interior out and completely dry the car, everything is still drying outside of the car. The rain yesterday was freaken crazy. Luckily his motor did not hydrolock and his electrical system is fine.

Yeah, I have a CAI but I very rarely drive my car in the rain and especially not when it is a very heavy rain. I also avoid anything that looks like a puddle. They are fine to have but you just have to be extra careful. Sorry to hear the news. Good luck with whatever you decide to do

I've already had my bad experience with a CAI and hydrolock... I'm definitely not taking any chances for ~1hp gain....

thats why its good to get a bypass valve like the ones on aem or nismo...they prevent hydrolock...when pressure around the intake changes it sucks air from the bypass which is just an open section of hosing with a filter element material around it...

I heard there isn't a bypass valve for the g35c yet. Its still in production.

Don't ask me, I thought all bypass valve are universal. Got this information from www.stillen.com

Getting back to the original question, odds are if it is really bad, you just have to replace rods, pistons, valves and maybe a few other things. But definitely not a new block and everything else that comes with it if there are only a few parts that are busted. You can probably send your car in to a very reliable performance shop that knows VQ35's and they will rebuild your engine for you with some performance parts. I'm sure you will save some money also. But in order to save money and get the best and most reliable setup, you will have to do a lot of searching and a lot of calling around.

Most intakes systems are 3 inches in diameter so all it takes is to cut the pipe and fit a aem bypass...and you only lose top end power. All these people are worried about losing 1-2 hp and the thing is you make all of that at top end...I doubt most drivers go red to red on shifts. You gotta figure where you are making the horsepower and what the tradeoff is to ensure the motor. CAI are great for racing and all but the benefits are usually not fully appreciated on a day to day driving application for most drivers. Be safe and get a pop charger or stillen cold air box or even a K&N pannel filter and save yourself the stress of hydrolock and having to disassemble the car to get to your filter.

I'm sorry to say most of the time I've seen hydolocked motors, the rod will bust though the block. It's not worth it to go in there and try to fix every little thing. Find a junk yard motor and install it a a reputable shop. You should be able to get out the door for at least a few grand under the dealer's price.

Sorry to hear about it though. I truly feel for you.

Did you talk to your insurance company? In my experience it will be covered as flood damage (happened to one of my ex-girlfriends mom's Concord a few years ago). Don't mention that you had a CAI installed though.
