the cork gasket is actually 'glued' onto the plenum.
i went to retorque everything and one bolt snapped in two. great.... seems like my luck with the plenum is down. i'm switching back to the stock plenum... hopefully that will seal down.
thanks for the help guys and lsdunique. this plenum is for sale.

I got my v4 last night and it took about 50 minutes and 3 beers to install.
After the three beers wore off, I drove it and the air flow has definitely been freed up. Engine braking is much less, the engine sounds like it isn't having to work as hard in the upper rpm band, but is giving more power. I had to adjust my brace, but no problems. Sounds very good.
You give up too easily. I bet you find the problem when you swap back. Go to pep boys and get some permatex copper gasket maker, apply sparingly around the kinetix seal and reinstall. Rarely does anything go right the first time. Try again, you owe it to yourself and your Z.

^ not fixed. no more bov or sci-fi spaceship sounds once car is off... i don't think it's a leak. i have used redherring's silicone gasket idea and i believe the plenum is sealing up really nicely. used it for throttle body too just to be sure.
i called Performance Nissan service and they say a leak within the plenum/intake will cause a higher idle. my idles are fine... very smooth and at nominal rpms (600~700). car cranks fine during the cold too.
service tells me it has something to do with the fuel... which may explain the stall during warm cranks. in any case, taking the car in for diagnostics tomorrow and getting this PITA fixed.
thanks all for the help.
happy and safe motoring.

Well i tightened all my bolts down again, and i never had the problem after. I only had the warm engine, no start issue once, but never had any issues with driveability then or now. Reset your ecu after tightening all the bolts down. It may be a kinked vaccum line that runs into the plenum at the back.
good luck with it.
good luck with it.
