Default Question about headers and heat

Is anyone doing anything about the heat from their headers and its effect on air intake temps? This would especially affect those metal intake tubes on aftermarket intakes.

I'm having my Topspeed headers Jet-Hot ceramic coated. They coat both the inside and outside, which will reduce underhood temps significantly over uncoated headers. This also keeps the heat in the exhaust pipes which maintains velocity for improved performance.

Speedracer - Unless you have the JWT popcharger, I doubt the intsallation of the headers will change your INTAKE air temperatures significantly. The stock as well as most of the other aftermarket intakes (stillen, Nismo, Injen, etc) take air from behind the front bumper where the air should be pretty much separated from the under hood air - especially when the car is moving.

While on the subject of underhood heat - do purchase some adhesive heat wrapping for the brake and fuel lines on the passenger side. I didn't notice anything dangerous there, but we wrapped them to be on the safe side. You should be able to get the stuff at any motor sports supply store. I got the 2000 degree 1.5" x 15' roll (can't remember brand name). It was enough for my G and a 350z and there is some left over. I guess it is insurance to help me sleep at night

Unfortunately, no. I had sent out my headers before I even realized that you were setting up a group buy.

Would you still recomend doing this tape even if the headers are coated? I'm not familiar with the exact lines you're referring to (haven't really spent much time under the hood).

Remember, aftermarket headers don't have the heat shields the stocks do; right now, i'm running a jet-hot gb for header coating. if you're interested, go to www.jet-hot.com and check it out--decreases underhood temps by 50%, and let me know if you want in on the gb.

I guess its really up to you. I think I still would, its takes only 5 minutes to put the tape on the lines and costs about $15. For me its just a little extra insurance.

The lines are located on the passenger side wheel-well and run vertically down the wheel well. They come within about 2" of the headers.

This probably isn't necessary even on an uncoated set of headers, but I just like the added peace of mind.

Buy the tape. Take off the headers and put the new ones in place (just hold it there on the studs). Now look at anything within 3" of the headers and now you can decide for yourself if the tape is necessary. If you decide not - return the tape. That's what I suggest. Good luck!

well it decreases the underhood temps, but can warp the exhaust and cause damage to your cats because of increased heat inside the header itself. small increases in interior heat are good for flow but if temp reaches above 1300 for too long inside the cat it will burn itself up. (this is for those of you who actually care about preventing acid rain and global warming). If you dont believe me i took info mostly from Modified-oct04 and nissanperformancemag.com tech articles

My Nismo headers are coming in this week and I do plan on getting the Jet-hot. When is the group buy happening? i don't want to wait too long.

Its going on now; call Todd or Chris at Jethot, and tell them you're in the 350z/g gb, make payment arrangemnts, and mail off your headers to the address they give you; 2000 option has one shipping address, and sterling has another.
Jethot's #: 800-432-3379.

Do you know of anyone on our site that this has happened to specifically with the jethot coating, or is this all hypothetical?

I was thinking about the coating today. The thing is that $230 (header cost) + $180(coating) =$410. For that we could have just got the DC ceramics and been done with it. Don't get me wrong we got an excellent deal on the headers. Just not sure if the coating is worth almost doubling the cost.

My thinking: with all the money i saved on the headers, i can afford the coating, and since i live in san diego, where corrosion issue greatly shortens the life of dc ceramics, which are made of very soft metal, i'm still way ahead of the game. how's fla for corrosion?

Since I don't live near the beach it's not bad @ all. Anyone that got in on the deal is in a no lose situation, I just can't decide if it's actually worth it or not.

Does your baby like extreme heat? Mine doesn't. As i've said before, stock headers have heat shields, aftermarkets don't...no brainer to me.

The heat generated is a "huge" deal. It does affect intake temps, but not by much really. You can get a heat shield from the G35 injen intakes if you want, but it wouldn't help a great deal. If you are very concerned by it, i'd actually recomend that you stay with the plastic intake pipe, instead of swaping to a metal pipe.
