Default Plenum spacer installed.....Impressions

First of all I went with Hydrazines spacer versus AAM. After much reading and thinking I decided that since both were producing Dyno's showing ~10HP, that I would get the least expensive of the two.

For anyone else with this spacer or any for that matter yet to install, be very carefull tightening bolts. It is extremely easy to overtighten and strip the lower plenum mounting points. So the key is take your time and be gentle.

As for performance the butt dyno says something has happened. The car seems more responsive and appears to pull harder/stronger as you go above 3K RPM.

Now is it enough of a difference to positively rule out a placebo effect? I would have to say no. Only a dyno run would prove it out for sure. I am not spending dyno $$$ to prove out a less than $150 part.

I have TS headers and helix cats awaiting install. Along with this spacer and my Fuji y-pipe and exhaust will complete my NA mods. Once everything is in I will dyno to see what I ended up with and then determine if I will cap it off with an ECU mod of some sort. Hopefully the Technosquare flash will be sorted out soon for 2004.5 Z's.

At this point a dyno wouldn't tell us much about the spacer since it's already on and my car is not stock. I have the y-pipe and exhaust on there as well. I never did a baseline dyno pre mods.

I will be giving you a call next week to see if I can make the time to come down and get the headers and hi-flo cats installed.

A couple of runs after its all done would be great so that I can see what all this $$$ i've spent has gotten me. As well as getting me an AFR reading to use if I decide to send my ECU off to Technosquare.

After going about my business today and driving the car around a bit more, it does seem to pull off the line a little quicker. It is definitely more responsive with the spacer. Above 3K RPM on hard acceleration also seems to show some improvement.

I drove mine over 300 miles last weekend on all kinds of backroads, I would say 3k on up has improvement and considering it looks completely stock and retains the strut bar, it was the only solution I was going to go with for a plenum solution. I don't have any dyno info either so it's all subjective.

I wrote up an install guide for the spacer here http://www.hypersprite.com/auto/tech-z-002/index.asp
It talks about the bolt tightening.

This is what it looks like installed, but it is impossible to tell

This is what it looks like before setting the plenum back down on it

If you've never done any stock dynos, how can you can begin to know what all those mods have done for you?

Consensus based on many baseline dyno's posted indicate that a stock Z puts down ~230rwhp. If I dyno above that then the difference is the improvement. Not perfect but it will be close enough. There are also many similarly configured Z's and I will use those posted dyno's as a general comparison as well.

I had read that it would add a little bit more growl to the engine, but I don't notice anything.

I installed a crawford plenum a few weeks ago, and it definitely growls more. I heard the kinetix growls even louder.... I can feel a difference in performance as well!

No I haven't reset the ECU. Iv'e just done some daily type driving and some WOT runs to gauge any change with the spacer.

Should be no need to reset the ECU. Whether you do a reset or not, the ECU will adapt as best it can to the new airflow, and that'll take a little bit of time.
