Default Whats a better mod: plenum or final drive?

What does everyone think would be better for the money. A plenum, Crawford or Kinetix, or the 6MT final drive? (I have the 5AT) I can get parts from Nissan cheap so they would be about the same price.

that's comparing apples to oranges, each mod changes teh car in different ways. What are you looking to do with the car? top speed? just daily drive? track? quarter mile racing?
each mod has it's own benefits and downfalls.

quarter mile racing: the final drive, no questions' asked would be the better choice.
top speed: plenum, because the final drive hurts top speed performance....

It all depends.

I vote final drive. It helps the entire powerband not just high end. Plus you can actually feel the difference without just thinking you feel something. ;-)

I thought the final drive made 1/4 mile times worse? Do you have any evidence to post that proves otherwise?

I posted a review of my final drive install on this site somewhere. I picked up 2mph on the trap and et stayed about the same. If you could get traction, I think it would drop et's as well.

My car is my daily driver with the occasional trip to the drag strip.

Well considering that the final drive is supposed to improve your accelleration, how does that hurt quarter mile times? I fail to see that. Especially when you change any sort of gearing that hurts top end speed overall (high speed or top speed runs on the fwy etc..) then it's only common sense to assume that quarter mile times will more than likely drop. However IT ALL DOES depend on the driver, you can never argue around that.

I think the Final Drive is the most impressive of all the mods you listed. A friend of mine (Z Cruzn on these forums), has nearly every NA mod you can get on a Z. I went from riding in my car to riding in his and even though I got to experience all his mods and it may be subjective, I believe he told me that the 3.9 Final Drive was what I felt the most. It was quite impressive. It freaking pulled me to the seat.

Here's his writeup over at http://www.350zmotoring.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=23281

Edit: Damn, I didn't read it carefully. I notice you have a 5AT. I'm assuming you want the 3.5 Final Drive for the AT? I retract my statement because I was commenting on the 3.9 final drive. Still a good writeup if you want to read about it.

Hmm.. I know there's more than one DB in Lexington. I don't think that was me. I came in on I-64 this morning from Louisville and cut over on Newtown Pike towards UK Campus.

I'm trying to make my DB stand out from the other DBs in Lexington. For some reason, it's the most abundant color here (UK Blue, go figure...). I was disappointed to see so many DB here. Anyway, I got my new license plate today to help me be unique. So if you see a license plate that says SHIFT Z on a DB Z in Lexington, that will be me.

I do wave at every Z I run into. I remember going up I-65, a black Z drove by my brother in his G35 and then came up next to me, waved, and kept going. His license plate was an IU plate, so I assumed he was going back up to Bloomington. If you run into me, honk your horn. I like running into other Z brothers & sisters.

I would think the 3.5 would only help a 5AT in the 1/4 mile, or really any time (except a lower top speed, which is irrelevant if you still have the 156 governor. As far as the 3.9, it can actually lower your 1/4 eta if it makes you shift into 5th gear... as long as you are staying in 4th still with the stock 6mt 3.5 ratio.

*theoretical analysis*

Well... here's the thing. I've been keeping tabs on the Zs here. Here's what I've seen thus far:

1) Male, Silverstone Z, Owner of Street Sports.
2) Male (350G - a fellow forum reader), Redline Z with Greddy TTs.
3) Male (Z Cruzn - another fellow reader and friend), Silverstone Z with Nismo mods.
4) Your Silverstone Z
5) Male (Elderly), Chrome Silver Z.
6) Female (Alpha Omega Pi sorority girl), Chrome Silver Z.
7) Male (Guy that lives in my neighborhood), SB Z.
7) Female (UK student), DB Z Roadster.
8) My DB Z
9) Male (African American), DB Z.
10) Male (kybluez - forum reader & IBM Programmer), DB Z.
11) Male (Young looking, blonde haired), DB Z. I think #10 & #11 are the same person, not sure though.
12) Female, DB Z. I ran into her once, but she said something like "this is what they gave me to go home in!" I assume she wrecked her car and got a Z as a rental? Never saw her again.

That's my list. I'm trying to get to know the other Z owners around here, but only about 4 are into cars and we're all friends. Oh and by the way, I like your Kazera KZ-As. I never seen 'em before, so I google'd it. They look tight.

damn lol, you do keep tabs. yea i've talked to Zcruzn and seen him around town, his review pretty much sold me on the 3.9 final drive which im having installed in a week. and ive seen 350g around town, i heard he recently had someone run into his parked Z, i think it was a dui . I've also seen the owners of streetsports Z too.

Yea I got the Kazeras cause they were pretty decently priced, and weigh about 23 lbs i think. Not the lighest, but not to heavy either. Well look forward to seeing you around. Hopefully that list you have doesnt get too much bigger lol.

Yeah... I love the Z and I like getting to know other Z owners. It just seems Lexington is NOT a place for that. It's like, the people you see driving Z are driving it just to drive (if that makes any sense). They don't really appreciate it. Z Cruzn and I had a long talk about this last week.

Speaking of the other owners, I ate dinner with Z Cruzn last week. Really awesome guy and we're going to caravan to ZDayZ together. His car is freaking awesome. I met 350G once and he's a really cool guy too. It's a shame what happened to his car. He handled it very maturely. I would've snapped for sure...

Since we're back on topic, experiencing Z Cruzn's 3.9 Final Drive was absolutely incredible. His in-depth review was awesome, but I think experiencing it is a totally different story. I want one too but I already have a list of things I need to do first. I went to the 350evo.com site and saw there were different ones. Which one are you getting? I wonder if it matters much. They have the following listed: 3.917 Final Drive ($849.95), 3.917 Final Drive w/ Nismo LSD ($1,750.00), 3.917 Final Drive w/ Nismo LSD Assembled ($2,334.95). I wonder which one Z Cruzn has and I wonder if they the Nismo LSD really matters.

I'm afraid my list may have grown. I have to budget it some more.

yea i know what you mean. I've always loved the Z's, my first car was a 91 NA 300zx, not that fast but still probably not the best idea for a 16 year old lol. But yeah i've been wanting to get a ride in ZCRUZN's car after he got the final drive installed, plus i just want to feel how all the mods have changed the car. It is one sweet looking Z.

I just bought the ring and pinion without the LSD. I have the Base model so it doesnt come with LSD and didnt want to spend the extra $. i paid the $849.95 for ring and pinion and extra for the pinion nut and crush sleeve. Im driving up to 350evo next wednseday to have them install it, so look for another review wednseday night...It should be a fun drive back from Cincy .

If you want to check out the car after i get it installed let me know. It might give you a better idea of how much a difference the final drive alone gives since were both somewhat stock (all i have performance wise is the popcharger). Anyways i think we took over this thread lol

Haha yeah, we hijacked it but we straightened it out towards the end! My Z is a Performance trim, so I dont' know if that would force me to get the other Final Drives than the regular $850 one.

Sure I'd love to check it out. I'm in the process of ordering a pulley and a popcharger from Performance Nissan (Props to Jason). I have to get some credit card stuff taken care of. Hit me up with a PM and maybe we can meet up. I'm waiting on Z Cruzn's dyno. He dyno'd today with Nismo CAI & popcharger. When he gives me the results, I'll order my stuff from Performance Nissan.
