Default K&N Air Charger installed!

Whooo~~ got my K&N air charger installed today...like i said before it claims to make 10.6 hp at 5500 on their official website but basically a short ram i guess and it's NOT carb approved...the only reason i bought this was cuz the CAI on my Mazda6 sounded aggressive so i thought i'd go with K&N again....i knew the install on the CAI for this car is a hassel cuz i gotta take off the front bumper...so i decided to go with this instead....this short ram install looked simpler on the instructions provided on their website....OR SO I THOUGHT~~what can i say, it ended up taking me three freaking hours to complete....i had to run to autozone twice, first to get the stupid tool i needed to unscrew the stupid MAS off the tube(it had the gay 6 star patterned screws), then second i had to go buy an extra rubber hose tube because they forgot to give me one in the package!!!!! those idiots!...more hassel was from installing the soft rubber tube around the filter box it provided....which took me about half an hour to put on, so yeah....install was a bi@tch. The actually fitting of the tubes was not that great neither, the whole thing is actually a lil bit longer than the space i had to put it...the filter ended up jammed into the stock nose leading into the stock air filter box.

The way the car handled was not bad at all tho....it roared like i knew it would....past 3 to 3.5 it roared deeply like an lion heehee....sexy as hell....i felt more pull and was glad about that...here's some pics for you peepz~~

Hmm? Not bad. Wonder if that heat shield will work with my Popcharger?

What is the shield made of & would you know if they sell this seperately? Guess it's time do some research.

it's $425 if you buy it off k&n's online website......i found one for $298 including tax and shipping on this website

http://www.autoanything.com/products...low_intake_kit

the heat shield doesn't enclose the filter on the top...i dont know what the material of the heat shield is made of....feels like metal! ahahha....they do say on that link that the black hose has a cross-link nylon structure....and no i dont think you can buy the heat shield separtately...at least i haven't find it available on those sites......if you were to buy it off of the above link, just keep in mind that my package was missing a rubber hose....i was supposed to have two but only got one...im not sure if it was K&N's fault or theirs....dont know how u could prevent that from happening to u neither......the funny thing is on that site they say it gives u 26 hp!! LOL

Glad to see you have your priorities straight and only buy mods that are easier to install. I don't know what CAI you are talking about, but I definitely never took my bumper off to install my Nismo CAI.

yea i thought i had to cuz of the instruction for the K&N typhoon CAI....but i guess different brands had different installations? I also heard from a friend's friend that the install for a CAI was really a hassel....so i THOUGHT the air charger is simpler since the the instruction seemed easier. I also asked people on this forum about the air charger, but no one really seemed to know anything about it....thought i give it a try....right now the install is over im glad....just gotta wait til i clean my filter LOL, it's gonna be a bi@tch all over again~~

I think you made a good choice, but the Nismo install is not much worse. It says to remove the wheel and the fender liner completely, but you can get away with not doing that. I like how it cleans up and un clogs that side of the engine bay.

My thouhgt's are that there really isn't a big difference between that set-up and a Typhoon intake other that the cover and intake tube under the front bumper. My guess would be that you could just buy the Typhoon and not install the lower tube or cover.

My idea would be to get the typhoon and not install the cover. You then would get a slight ram air effect and the benifit of a short ram. The big benifit over the JWT would be the heat shield. But a JWT is nothing more that a short ram where you use the stock intake.

Overall design of the Typhoon would make it the best of all the systems out there today...IMO...for what that is worth.

i think the filter design of this air charger kinda suck. It's not an open element filter like the popcharger. This thing is closed on the front tip. The way it's hooked up right now it also blocks most of the opening of the air coming in through the stock air guide. The sound is there....im not sure how much it gains in power tho....all i know is i used to get 23 to 25 in cities....now im only getting 19 or 20, driving normally! sucks!~~

Well I have the K&N Typhoon and I like it alot. I got it for $260 shipped from modacar.com. I didnt have to remove the bumper to install. I do have to admit that the fit could have been a little better. Maybe its because it says for 03-04, and I have an '05 and subtle changes may have been done tot he layout in the engine bay. But aside from that im happy with it and it looks great not to mention sounds amazing and I can feel a seat of the pants performance increase.
