Default JWT Popcharger & 5AT

Hey guys,

Not sure if this is in the right forum for this, but I've been reading about how some people have been having stalling problems with the install of the JWT Popcharger. I have a 5AT & I was thinking of putting a Popcharger in. Is the stalling issue just happen with MT or is this a universal (MT & 5AT) issue? Last thing I want to do is get the Popchager & then start having the car stall on me.

Thanks in advance for the replies!

I have a 6 MT 350 and the only time I've experienced this is after accelerating the car hard and then putting it into neutral. When the RPM's drop quickly the computer thinks something is wrong and my car has never actually stalled, but the gauges stopped reading and it cut off the accelerator pedal. That's just my experience so I don't really know about the auto. Hopefully not though since it shouldn't ever go into neutral. I've stopped taking mine out of gear and haven't had any more problems.

The JWT in the automatic will not stall because you are always in gear.. the only time it will stall is if you put it in neutral and you are at high speeds 90+... You will love the JWT popcharger... I painted the heat shield with high temperature paint that contains ceramic material so that it will cut the heat down around the air filter. I would also recomend Motordyne Spacer.. i have the 1/4 inch spacer and you can tell a really big difference.

Just don't shift into neutral at high speeds after accelerating hard and you'll be fine.

That's awesome! You notice a big difference? In sound or in performance or both? I have the JWT popcharger and have a 3/8th's inch motordyne spacer on the way. Can't wait!

I have an 5AT with the JWT Popcharger... works great. I still love the sound! (Although some would say it sounds like bad brakes but I disagree). Performance wise, this has been beaten to death.. but I love the sound.

Also, do I NEED this chrome Z intake tube? Looks to be mainly cosmetic, but if I'm wrong let me know.

I did some research & the spacer sounds like a good idea. Thinking about the 1/4". Any big difference performance-wise between the 1/4" & the 1/2"????

Does this affect the NISMO Cold air intake?

It's a piece of cake. Took me like a half an hour. And it comes with directions and pictures which makes it really easy.

I hope this doesn't sound too stupid, but i'm new to the forum. I've been trying to search through old posts...but have had no luck yet. What is a popcharger, and what kind of gains can be expected from it?

Do it!

Popcharger is awesome--sound and performance are worth it and install is 30-45 minutes tops. You don't need the intake tube...That's mainly for appearance. I've never stalled either and I've had it for over a year now.

I will be installing my 1/4 MD spacer in the next week or when I get a chance... From what I've read, the combo of the Popcharger and MD Spacer is the best bang for the buck intake mods you can make.

You won't be disappointed.

A popcharger is JWT's short ram air intake. You gain a nicer looking engine bay, a very cool sound, and MAYBE a couple of HP at the wheels...

I haven't heard of any problems with the NISMO CAI. I noticed my RPMs dropped a little at idle and it runs a little bit rough (normal for the VQ), but am installing a grounding kit which should fix that problem.

Will I need to buy the oil for the popcharger now or does it come pre-oiled???

Plus I was thinking of doing the grounding kit as well, but will this increase performance? I've seen post saying it has no effect whatsoever.........

One of the reasons that the stalling could be an issue is if the JWT is "over-oiled" and starts to screw with the air flow sensor. I would recomend that when you get the JWT place it on some newspaper and let any excess oil (if any at all) drip.

Sit it there for 1-2 days.

It comes pre-oiled... I'm pretty sure you can use K&N oil too... same stuff, different dye color.

As for the grounding kit, some people say yes, others say no. I read one interesting thread where a guy disconnected it, did the dyno, then connected it and did another dyno right away. I think he got about a 3% gain. This can be attributed to warmer tires, etc... but other guys who did two pulls in a row only got about 1.5% gain on the second pull with no changes to the car. Either way, it should smooth out the motor... and for a 6-wire system from Z-Xtreme for $65 USD shipped, I'm not risking much.

Keep the stock intake tube on the popcharger - proven much better than any of the cosmetic attempts !
