Borla or Nismo
I have a Borla exhaust, if you take your time, make sure all the pipes fit together and properly torque down the clamps, you won't have any leaks. It only took me an hour to install and I have had no problems, or leaks for the two years it has been on.
people that have leaks do not know how to install the exhaust.
borla has a history and make exhausts for Lambos, Corvettes, Ferrari's...etc
People that prefer Nismo, get it cause of the name and not cause of the performance or they just shoot for the whole nismo thing.
And for the price the gains suck. Borla TD is a exhaust for top end gains, look at the dyno sheets provided by borla. But then again, they test everything at perfect evalation and temperature to get better #'s for selling purposes. I chose Borla because of the #'s and quality, i don't have any leaks and i took my time installing it.
Borla's exhaust may not be the best looking one, but one of the best.

Whataya talkin about? The NISMO gets slightly less HP and slightly more torque than the Borla, it sounds better, looks better and is generally better made. Thats why many of us chose it over the Borla. As for price gains it is slightly more costly than the Borla, you gotta pay for quality.
Yeah Borla has a history in the domestic market, so what.
I went with the Borla true dual exhaust.
I don't know about this 'look" is better thing people are saying... The only difference I notice or anyone on the street will notice is the word "nismo" on the side of the tips.
I got the Borla because at a local meet, I heard both the nismo and the borla rev up and the borla was definately the sound that suited my taste.
Since to me, the look and performance are all subjective, I went with the sound that suited me.

Um... I don't know what to say... I'll just paste some links:
nismo: http://www.zcarparts.com/store/graph...arge156085.jpg
Borla: http://borla.com/media/prod_images/xlarge/140045.jpg
http://borla.com/media/prod_images/large/tip_37.jpg
From what I can tell from those photos, both have this "angled up tips" you are talking about. Now, about the polished muffler, obviously the nismo muffler is very close to the rear area as you can see from the photos, hence they polished it since people where more likely to see it. But the Borla's muffler is more back and they did not need to polish since people will not see the muffler... unless they were smurfs.
So once again, I stick to what I stated before.

Smurfs, or every car behind on the road, like another Z owner.
Saying people only choose Nismo because of the name on the side is just ridiculous (besides, it is also on the back
).
The stock system is made by Calsonic, they are respectable but were kept to a price (see Bose issues) and sound level by Nissan and even still, it flows very well. The front resonator is a straight though perforated glass pack, the back is just another glass pack that splits in the center and heads out either side. Given the criteria I wounder if anyone could have made a better stock system, as the gains for all aftermarket systems is pretty tepid.
Nismo is made by Fujitsubo, one of the leading system makers in Japan and they know their stuff when it comes to making power with exhaust systems. The difference between Stock and Nismo are 100% 304 stainless, mandrel bent tubing , better Y pipe collector, much larger piping throughout. To say it's just a stainless stock system shows you have never seen the system in person. The Nismo tips also longer and are tapered so there is no abrupt cut off of the tip where it is connected to the muffler exits like the stock Calsonic system when viewed from the side of the car.
Borla is one of the leading system makers in the US and they know their stuff when it comes to making power with exhaust systems. I don't have much personal information on this system but slip fit is not as big of problem as most people make it out to be. I do know that the Borla tips are a larger diameter than stock but seem shorter in length and end abruptly where they are connected to the muffler exits (see pictures posted above)
For those that are worried about leaks, they should use exhaust joint paste (local auto part store) when assembling their systems. It helps during assembly and makes it easier to disassembly later (especially compared to welding). I have used it for years on my other car, where the headers are three pieces, and the exhaust another two, all slip fit, and I have never had a leak.
Really, the choice is a personal one, you just got to check them out yourself.

Borla has higher gains from what ive seen in person and is better for future FI (should you decide to go there). Borla also has a better warranty than the nismo. That being said if nismo offered a true dual id be all over it.
I chose the NISMO because it is more subtle when cruising, but you definitely hear in at WOT!! I believe it retains the unique, aggressive, sweet signature sound of the Z!!! I have a Ford Explorer sport with custom CGI exhaust and K&N CAI, so I get my fix of the deep domestic muscle car sound with my truck (Loud and Deep as hell)! Also love the laser etched NISMo logo on the side of the tail pipes, just got a compliment the other day!! Hope that helps, I was in the same boat a few months back, but I was debating NISMO vs. Injen vs GReddy!! I was hearing Borla was straight up loud, something I didn't want on my new car and already had with the Explorer!

Hmmm, looks like the stillen would have been a good overall exhaust to get. I just didn't get a chance to hear one in person so didn't want to risk getting a noise that I would regret.

stillen is too heavy imo, also who says the polished nismo muffler is so great? Its just one more thing for me to obsessively clean on my Z and its also a big "look at me!" to the popo.
You can go to www.sportzmagazine.com and hear the diffrent exhaust systems. While it is not as nice compared to an in person, better than nothing.

I have the Nismo Catback exhaust and Love It! I almost got the borla TD, but I liked the sound of the nismo exhaust better. Its pretty quiet when idling and cruising speeds, but when you rip into it, it's nice and throaty. I've had nothing but good comments about my exhaust. It's a little more money, but you get what you pay for. The fit and finish is great, not to mention it doesn't void your warranty.
