Thumbs up Exhaust sound volume increase - cheap & easy!

One of the few complaints I had about my 350Z was that the exhaust note was too quiet! It sounded good, but I wanted more! I have heard it said that this is one of the most common complaints among 350Z owners.

A friend (thanks, Eric1h!) suggested that I take it to a friend of his who does custom exhausts. I went there today and for $40 he did a very simple mod that made a great improvement!

There's a resonator, really just a simple glass pack, on the exhaust pipe in front of the large muffler in the rear. He cut out that resonator & replaced it with straight pipe. The improvement is perfect! It's not overwhelming, but it's definitely louder than before; just the right touch. If you goose the gas in neutral you get some crackling that was never there before. My father, who owned 5 or 6 Zs over the years, said "Now THAT's the way that car's supposed to sound!".

It may be just my imagination, but the car also seems to rev a little more freely, maybe I gained a HP or two. I have no way of knowing for sure.

If you're looking for a little more volume on the exhaust note, I'd definitely suggest this little mod!

Sounds like a great Ideal. I might try it instead of buying a new exhaust. Will it void the warranty?

I would definitely suggest that you at least try it before a whole new exhaust. The guy who did it said that you can do whatever you want to anything behind the catalytic converters (which are just behind the headers) without messing with the warranty.

Hmmm... I did a couple of searches before I started a new thread - maybe it's in the archive.

anyone tossed it one a dyno? I need to go run mine so I can get a baseline before I touch anything. ya know, maybe Ill try and do a dyno this week, before I install the grounding kit, and then Ill install the kit midway, ussually you get 3 runs, perhaps 2 without and 1 with.

Hmmmmm

I'm looking for a little more sound too, but I'm afraid it will drone on the highway. My last car was actually loudest between 1800-2500 rpm (cruising rpm), and actually quieted down above that. Does the Z with this mod have this problem? Thanks.

I've driven it about 50 miles since the mod. It quiets down at low RPM. The only time when I thought it might be long-term unpleasant was when I was cruising at highway speeds in 5th, 3500 RPM or so. At that steady rev you get a middle-C drone. I like to keep it in 5th when I'm in high-speed heavy traffic for the flexibility. A shift down to 6th solves the problem.

Yeah, I'd love to know if there's any HP gain from removing that resonator; let me know. I think a grounding kit will be my next mod.

Thanks for the link and thanks especially for the patience and understanding ....as I mentioned above, I DID attempt to search for a previous thread before I started this one; I'm not a newbie. Please keep in mind that this website is a time-linear thing, and different people are discovering things at different times. Thank you for your link to past discussions of the same subject; I'm sorry that we bored you.
