Cai Install
Looking at the Injen CAI kit I was wondering why if we just removed the stock air filter and housing and installed an extended tube and cone filter in front of the radiator that that wouldn't work just as well as buying the kit. Since most believe that unless we change the ECU, real measurable gain is not obtained all we are doing with the CAI is changing to a more aggressive sound.

well... you could... if you could create a tube that fits right, and is bent in the right direction. youd also need the filter. not to mention it replaces the stock section of tube with a smoother pipe. this is one of those areas where you could never match the research and design work put into it, and you would almost assuredly lose HP.
this is all of course assuming you find a tube shaped like theres, whcih Ive never seen, nor do I know where to even go to get a machine that can make it.

well K&N is nice and all, but its just a filter, no power will be gains(if it is, you will never notice it) its main selling point is its lifetime use. not even sound will change notably.
while a real CAI, made by a manufacturer, not only includes a filter similiar to K&N but the pipe is less restrictive, and tries to pull colder air, giving a ~5hp gain across the whole band, which is actually rather noticable, and it will be even more noticable in race conditions when the engine is hot and CAI is able to pull cold air still
