Z461-How is your Injen in the rain??
Im sure its fine or you would have heard. this hydro lock thing is getting out of hand. CAI have been used for MANY years, and they havent stopped selling them thus far. if you submerge it, your in trouble. end of story. other than that, water is heavier than air, and does not want to be sucked up unless it is forced it.
any minute amounts that vaporize in the air will hurt your performance(just like bad performance on a humid day) but it will burn up in the cylinder without causing any long term problems.
now something to be concerned about is a rock putting a hole in your filter, no damage to your car, but the filter would have to be replaced. I plan to just make a simple sheild out of screen material to just cover the filter and nothing else. that will eliminate that problem.

HAHA..funn you ask that. Thursday there was HORRIBLE rain. I was driving home @ 3AM hoping that nothing would get sucked in. I was doing about 80mph in terrible torrential downpour and sometimes doing full throttle. I drove for about 45 minutes and... nothing bad happened. When I got back I checked the area behind my custom grille and there was definately water on the filter, but not that much water in the area. SO, I'm assuming the filter DOES suck up some amount of water when it rains hard, HOWEVER I don't think it does anything to the engine.. The grille helped a lot though, because many times when I was on the freeway other cars in front of me, esp. trucks, would splash huge amounts of water on my car (enough so that i couldn't see through the windshield at times). SO, basically with my grille it's perfectly fine, I don't know how it would've fared without it?
C'mon guys its easy, just install a AEM air bypass valve in the cai, i have one on my car, even if you submerge the intake it will not draw water. So many of my friends have CAI's with no problems whatsoever. How many HP gain does the Z see with a CAI
actually a friend of mine hydrolocked his s2k last weekend when crossing a small stream during an organized drive. the water was about 1-1.5 ft deep. and we get water that deep quite often in houston... so it's a big concern of mine.
on the bright side, nothing broke or bent and we were able to get all the water out, and he says his car feels much stronger since then.

uhhhh, right.... people that stupid exist? and drive cars? and probably think their knowledgable.
yes if you go into 1.5 feet deep water (with a sports car???
) you will screw yourself up. of course, since our floor is less than a foot from the floor, you will likely also flood your cockpit... However, if you are unable to realize your car can not drive through a 6" puddle(to be on the safe side) then its simple, do not buy a CAI.
as for hp, the dyno shows about 4-6hp gain through the entire power band, which although doesnt sound very impressive, its over the whole range so it does help a good bit.

It's basically a fail-safe.
yeah, its a little tiny filter up on the top of the intake, sorta a higher resistance to pull air in then the big one down below, so unless the big one starts sucking water, it does nothing.
now what Im unsure of is what its drawback is. I assume there must be one, other than cost. maybe it always draws a small amount of hot air in? I donno... does anyone?

AEM website: "The valve installs along the upper portion of the inlet pipe on the same axis as the throttle body centerline. Should a drop in pressure occur within the pipe due to filter submersion, the valve shuts down induction at the filter and routes incoming air through its external orifices, eliminating any chance of water ingestion."

it really isn't going to be doing anything unless you completely submerge it in water. But then again, some people are stupid enough to drive through 1'-1.5' streams of water......

I dont know what these INJENs are like, but K&N has lots of oil and then after a while, dirt on it. Ive tried washing this thing with water only, and the water would not go through but maliciously bead off. Splashes should bead off...

sorry, had to get that off my chest.
Anyway, my post was about the AEM bypass valve and you gave me a link to someguy that thought he hydrolocked his engine. What's your point? Anyway, the guy thankfully didn't hydrolock his engine b/c he wasn't reving enough to create enough vacuum to pull up that much water so his car just stalled. According to what someone said, there have been a lot of cars stalling from water that end up not hydrolocking on that board.
