Default high flow cats vs. resonated test pipes

Are the HP difference that huge? I heard todays high flow cats have pretty good HP gain, just coming a little below test pipes's gain.

Can anyone confirm this?

jesus....if it were up to the search *****, nobody would ever post anything and this site would just be a "read-only" utility. Im sure almost every single question that someone might have has been answered at some point and time.

To answer your question, there are some hf cats out there that claim hp numbers at, or close to, race pipe numbers. Though I have not seen dyno numbers for a comparision, I would say that the sound from hf cats would be worth the trade off of one or two hp loss compared to test pipes, which, resonated or not, tend to make your exhaust sound like a bumble bee.

hope that helps.

Thank you. I ususally do a search first before I do a post.

But sometimes I like to start a new thread to see what other people have to say so we can start a debate. Maybe reviews and views have change since the old thread. Maybe new users would like to add their new experiences and knowledge as well.

I hate "search" and "repost" ***** as well. I think it harms the board. I like hearing new views and experiences of new users as well as old users who might have more to add since they posted a reply to an old thread. Maybe after more miles on their mods, they have more things to add.

And if you can see from the number of post I have, I have asked and answered a lot of posts. And when someone who ask a question that they can easily do a search for. I never tell them to search. I just answer their question hoping another debate can happen and we all can learn something new.

I agree with Tackett. If your looking for additional sound deadening, go with resonated test pipes. If you have a concern for emissions testing, go with high flow cats.

+1

on subject: IMO it comes down to whether or not you want to hassle with swapping back in the stock cat's when you need to test. I am loving my resonated test pipes for the sound. A few HP wouldn't concern me if the test pipes do give a few more. The sound is pretty cool and they don't cause a drone.
The thing about my set up that i absolutely hate is the plenum, it's the plastic one. That thing is driving me nut's and I'm getting rid of it. I'm going for an APS Tall Boy as soon as i can.
I can't even tell a difference with the headers as far as sound but you have my exhaust and intake. I know yours would sound great with the resonated test pipes.

Ah, thank you.

After reading these comments, I am thinking High Flow cats is my option. I don't want to sound like a "bumble bee" like someone said even with resonated test pipes. I love our Borla TD exhaust and I would hate for any mods to take away that low rumbling

But I am even more worried know about what you said about your plastic plenium... I am guessing you are talking about the Kinetix V4... Why do you absolutely hate it? My friend bought one and absolutely loves it. He drove for 30 minutes then open the hood up and I put my hand on the plenum for 10 seconds, it was luke warm! And with the plenum, you can hear his car coming as well as going

Ah! The pipes add a lower rumble over Borlas and they just raise sound level a little. Before pipes i could hardly hear the exhaust at idle. Now i can hear it but it's not loud. And it's never raspy at any time. I don't know what bumble bee is, maybe he never heard them with the Borla TD. It's still just as clean sounding IMO.

The V4 just makes a noise i can't stand anymore. Sure it sound good at WOT but any other time I'm not liking it, it's hella noisy. I guess it's a matter of taste.

how about adding test pipes to a stock exhaust? will this make it a lot louder and raspy or make it sound louder in a good way.

I have Topspeed Headers, Topspeed test pipes and the Borla TD exhaust. I have a lot of rasp from 4000-redline. I had it before the headers install, this past weekend, now it is even louder. It may be because I am supercharged, in conjunction with the test pipes, anyways, I am in the market for hi-flow cats, now.

Default Hard to know

The board has a lot of good info on test pipes and a few debates on resonated vs. normal vs. HF cats.

The underlying question people are probably looking for, how will it sound on my car. Unfortunately there isn't any good answer besides doing the mod. Your best bet is to locate someone in your area with the mod and a similar car.

In that respect is there anyone in the tampa/sarasota/bradenton/Orlando FL area who has resonated test pipe or HF cats on a stock exhaust?

I just installed my non-resonated test pipes on my stock exhaust... Mine is raspy between 3-4k depending on if I'm on it or not. Other than that is sounds stock...

If I get my camera this weekend I'll try to do two videos, one in car and one outside because it sounds different outside than inside.
