They might look similar but they flow much better.

they are NOT similar, and they DON'T look similar either. most aftermarket y-pipes are larger diameter than stock, and have smoother bends as well as better merging of the two header pipes into one. they are probably the best bang for your buck as far as exhaust components go, and they are very easy to install. between the JIC y-pipe and my Amuse R1, the Z sounds and runs noticeably better.

They are crush bends and aftermarket "Y" Pipes are mandrel bent. However, the most restrictive part of the exhaust is the cats. I would definitely do Hi-Flow cats first. My favorite is the Crawford.

the oem y pipe is horrible for flow. it makes the air bend 90 deg in, and then 90 degrees out into the merge section. my jic y-pipe does in 1 smoot bend into a merge seciton. it has a larger diameter, its lighter, and shiny!

Y-pipes will give you similar if not better than a cat-back exhaust. I think I posted this on 350zmotoring though.

I am dissapointed in my UTR Y-pipe. Loss of low end torque and loss of driveability (part throttle acceleration and less throttle response) on my '05 6MT G35 sedan. Also, there is resonation at 2800 rpm and there is added vibration as well. And then there is the "rattle snake" noise at WOT. And then the exhaust *tone* sucks. I could go on and on. I think my car made more useful power with the stock Y-pipe. Needless to say, I will be putting my stock Y-pipe back on before this weekend....

BTW, this is the first modification that I haven't liked...

I've put 100 miles on the Y-pipe. Anyone want to buy it? LOL

I noticed the same thing when i installed my JIC ypipe. i lost alot of low end grunt. I before i would tap the gas and the car would be super responsive.. but since the ypipe is in, its not as 'jumpy'.. however.. i did feel more gain at the Top end.... did u feel anythin there? i noticed you have a supercharger so it should have helped..

No, I don't own the 350Z anymore.

This is on an '05 G35 6MT sedan and I am normally aspirated. My mods are Crawford plenum, headers and hi-flow cats, JWT pop-charger, some lower and upper plenum porting and I did smooth out the throttlebody, Fujitsubo Legalis-R exhaust.

The Y-pipe is probably making some power up top, but the powerband feels really linear now compared to before. Takes longer to accelerate. Oh, and I have 3.917 gears and it still feels much more lazy on the bottom. With the stock Y-pipe, I could put it in 4th at about 35 mph and it would pull hard. Now it takes forever. I hate the exhaust tone too. Sounds farty with the aftermarket Y-pipe and the vibration and resonance at around 2800 rpm is very annoying. I'm sure with an ecu reflash I would make more power. I suspect that my car is running lean now.

But Y-pipes are a part of the cat-back package. What do you mean?

i think he means you will gain more HP with a Ypipe change, than just with a Bpipe and Muffler swap.

I have the same stupid 2800 rpm rattle/vibration sound, I'm wondering if a little welded plate up near the split would help eliminate this, as its kinda like a tuning fork right now. I can actually reproduce the the sound by taping the y-pipe with a screwdriver handle, seems to be coming from the merge or rear collector.

Some "cat-backs" are after the Y-pipe...

At least my sedan exhaust system is...
