From my research I did before making my purchase...the hks beats the borla on all counts besides cost. Of course looks are subjective but the HKS has the dual angled muffler cans where the borla uses a more stock single look muffler. Sound...both are deep, fairly quiet at cruising speed. Where they differ on the sound...above 3500rpm...the HKS changes to a very exotic tone that also increases in loudness a good bit as the rpm's climb.
HKS' fit is very good...I did have to put a small clearance dent on one mid pipe so it'd clear a body mount bolt head, it could have just been my car though. As far as lining up with the bumper...the HKS looks better than the oe system imo. The borla fits fairly good from what I've read...but the numerous pieces can be a challenge to keep from having leaks.
I like the Ti tips on the HKS...some do, some don't. To me the biggest assets of the HKS are the sound and muffler design/looks when looking at the car from behind . The Ti are nice bonus to the other assets.

As far as performance...I'd say they'd be very similar as most of the true dual systems like the borla, stillen, etc all seem to be fairly close to each other.
Again, dependability/build quality...I'd give the HKS a big nod cause it has far fewer parts to come loose. Plus the flanges where two parts bolt together are thick as hel* on the HKS. I don't see them ever warping and causing a leak. The welds are awesome also.
In fact, the other day when I took the car to the alignment shop(after installing the TVS)and they had the car up on the rack...all the mechs in the place came over to look at the exhaust. They all said it was a work of art...enough said.

It's sold out everywhere, all shops are waiting for the next crate to come in from Japan, and well if everyone is trying to get it, you can imagine how long it'll be sold out for hehe

If money is not an option, why not go with the Amuse R1 TI? http://www.i-m-racing.com/hkstitdualex.html The amuse is a full TI kit, its really light, has a great exotic sound and delivers good power. This is from research, I acutally don't have one.
I'm in the market myself and leaning toward the Borla TD over the HKS simply cause of $$$.
Heres my breakdown:
Borla: Looks similar to stock, deep sound, good HP, cost around $900.00
HKS: Double canister looks great IMO, deep sound, good hp gain, cost around $1,400.
With the saving I get from the Borla I can use it for other mods, but thats just me.

I'll have an opinion of the Borla in a few days. I love the Borla sound on the Z....nice and deep yet not annoying enough for my wife to start complaining.
But alone in the car I can let it breathe and enjoy the sound.

I am waiting for my HKS...and I am not the only one. Try forgedinternals.com. Sharif told me 2-4 weeks, but you never know. That was a guestimate. The best things come to those who wait. And are you really going to be driving your car that much now that its freakin butt cold?
I would wait.....hm...I did wait.
