Lol, it's like we have the same setup.

Before getting a specific intake, I read and researched on this forum as well as read reviews. And I knew right away from the beginning what my setup would be. JWT popcharger + Varis air duct.

With this setup, I'll get direct cold air to the popcharger while keeping the intake tube as short as possible. Thus eliminating the long curvy tube of a CAI setup.

Some people (myself included) think the varis duct looks like crap and don't want a gaping hole in one side of the bumper. Granted, a smooth duct drawing from the grill area would be better than a ribbed dryer duct (why I'm waiting for the Evo-R piece), but I seriously doubt it will slow the air down to be less than what enters the area in a purely stock configuration. Doesn't the Groupe-M intake use a flexible ribbed tube in a similar configuration? At any rate, proper testing by the individual will determine whether or not it is a fuctional mod on that particular car. I, myself, have the Popcharger and would be interested in adding the forthcoming Evo-R duct; it is short, smooth and stealth, unlike the Varis duct.

Point taken, But I do like the way the varis air duct looks, I like how aggressive it looks, and It's available now and for a price that I'm willing to pay.

okay, to all the people who think this is absolute crap, im away at college right now and when i come back im going to dyno test this along with a bunch of other mods, ill let you know how it turns out. it could be totally worthless, and i wont care - 8 bucks down the drain. it could gain 2 hp, and then its not worthless, people spend 100 bucks on a freakin pop charger that gives you 6 hp, im getting a third of that at under a tenth the price, why is it so absurd that i try to gain additional horsepower? i do agree, it should be painted black, and it will. and i am one of those who thinks that a hole in my front bumper, even if dressed up in carbon fiber, is still a hole in my freaking bumper, and i dont want it. if this duct is painted black you wont even notice it, and it should produce similar gains at wayyyy cheaper. thats what im going for, the gains from a cold air duct without a hole in my bumper and without costing 100 bucks for a freakin tube. i may be wrong about this, it may not work at all, but if it does work its definately a worthwhile way to suck that extra bit of power out of the motor without spending hardly anything.

might help at high speeds, when you're getting a ram air effect into the tube, but other than that I dunno... seems like an excessive legnth of intake tubing combined with the airbox and the stock z-tube. It's obviously not going to breath any easier than it would stock because you're using a stock airbox, and isn't that kind of the point of an intake? I understand the advantage of drawing in cold air, but I think in this case it would be negated by the fact it has to be sucked through 4 feet of dryer hose, an air filter, and then through another foot and a half of pipe.

This reminds me of a cold-air I saw on ebay one time, it had a box built around it that you could fill with ice, to cool the air going through it. Yeah, theoretically, it would help, but come on, it's ridiculous.

If you really want a good intake just buy a popcharger :P

[edit] This is just my $.02, not saying you shouldn't tinker and try it out. If anything, you'll have had a bit of fun working on your car, and that's worth it!

I give you props for trying that!!!!!
Even like you said, if it dosent work, who cares it didnt cost you much!!!
Let us know your dyno results!!!!

jadkowski, i agree about the intake, funny you mention that because my intake arrived on my doorstep just 30 minutes ago, it is to be used in conjunction with this. i agree, thats the major part of the whole system.

A more flush looking unit would look better I believe. But I don't think the varis is too bad. But what of this EVO R duct thingy? I don't know about it. Could someone fill me in?

EDIT:

Oh wait i just read that again. A smooth duct drawing from the grill area. Well, Varis it is then.

maybe someone around you has a datalogger so you could measure MAF voltages with and without it... that should be a good indicator as to whether or not you're getting more airflow

on my z, build date 09/02, those panels on each side of the grill are removable, held on only with screws behind the grill.

Can you elaborate how to get to those screws? Can you reach the screws in the front?

remove bottom engine cover. look and feel behind grill on each side. they are either screws or fasteners. can't remember which. it was like two yrs ago. they come off, but they also protect weaker parts of the radiator, so its good to put something like another grill over the front.

This is not a bad idea, the bad part is that when you are going slower it doesn't help much. Just so you have an idea though of how the tube flows drive the car and stick it out the window at about 60 and you'll feel that there is a lot of air being moved. A setup with this tube (as short as possible) and an air box of some sort would give a ram air effect as higher speeds. I use to have a similar setup in my GST and you could feel the difference when I had the duct installed and when I took the duct out. The car would feel a lot more powerfull when it was moving. I say good for you that you tried it out. All you need to do now is make the path shorter and build a box around your filter.

I personally am going with the varis duct because it is a direct path. Some don't like the hole in the bumper some do. As far as your setup, I say for 8 bucks its worth doing weather it works or not. If you put some sort of scoop on the end of the duct it would work better.

People are quick to critisize so don't let the bad comments get to you.

Run the dryer tube up to the top of the roof and duct tape into place. It will look awesome snaking it's way up there and think of all the clean air your engine will get, not to mention the looks you will get from the chicks.

Dam#, that is some funny $h!t.

anyways about functionality, i had my friend stick his hand in front of the duct in the front, and he can actually feel it sucking air, so yeah it definately works, you cant exactly feel air being sucked without this, its definately routing the suction to the colder air portion... so hey mission accomplished. now to paint it
hope you don't get much rain in your neck of the woods...looks like a great "water intake" to me
