Default Custom Intake Duct, Pics!!!

An amazing mod. Think about it this way, try and suck air through 4 feet of garden hose, then try and suck air through 2 feet. 2 feet will be way easier, same with an engine's intake tube, the shorter, the easier to breathe. BUT you have the problem of air density due to hot or cold air. This simple mod brings the best of both worlds. I have an otherwise stock Z but it actually changed the engine sound just a little bit, it's noticeable. Noticeable power gains, I don't really know, I think I just imagine it being faster But in any case it definately helps. Combine this with a great heat shield so that 90% of the air that you get comes from this tube, and you have what is probably the most horsepower efficient intake you can get.

What you need to get :

4" diameter tin tubing from home depot : $7.63
3 black zip ties
10mm socket wrench
scissors to cut zip ties

I had all those other parts, so this is basically an $8 mod.

And now for pictures :

So basically, you've run an dryer hose from in front of the grill to capture air and blow it into the opening for the stock air box, correct?

I'm not convinced that it does a whole lot of good. You've run the hose along the path that the air took naturally. The area behind the bumper where you ran the hose is pressurized by air coming in through the grill opening. Some flows across the radiator but some also flows to the side and up through the opening and into the inlet on the air box.

If you had an OBDII monitor, you could monitor the temperature at the MAF with and without your mod to see if it makes any difference.

I initially was going to use some sort of collecting pan, basically an open box that would angle back to a hole in the back where I'd connect the hose, so that more air would be forced to follow the path to the intake and no other path, but using the 4" diameter intake it took up almost the whole grill height, and so I'd be increasing length, but it wouldnt make too much more of a difference. I don't have the tools to test it that way, but you know i could just take a big fan and put it in front of the car, and turn it on and then hold my hand in front of the intake box. Then I could feel if more air was hitting my hand with or without the duct. Seems to me like that be a very rough way of seeing if there's any benefits to this. If not, hey it was only 8 bucks, lol, I don't care that much if it didnt work out. But yes I would definately like to test and see how it did.

why not just remove those two blacl panels (one on each side of the grill) and have the tube mount to where the panel once was??? And just what are those panels for??? seems like to me it would benifit cooling if those where removed...

Uhhhhhh.....I don't think so. You can't seriously think that piece of dryer hose actually does anything. This is a joke, right?

Actually, he's not the first to try this....

And of course, it's cheaper than the K&N Typhoon which works the same way.

What's your definition of "rice", cause the mod is more like a redneck thing to do.

i did that on mine but ended up restricting a lot of air cause is not a smooth surface and blocks the direct air to the filter.

the trick is getting out the ole belt sander and work your way down from 80 grit to 1000 grit to get that smooth polished look! If you want even more appeal get you some wood stain (color of course is always open) and slap a few coats on it...and for the sides of the car paint you a sign that reads...FEEL THE WOOD... that should scare anyone away who wants a piece of that puppy!

haha well okay i wasnt exactly doing this to make it look good, just functionality, but since it apparently looks THAT bad, ill just paint it black... hahaha

anyways about functionality, i had my friend stick his hand in front of the duct in the front, and he can actually feel it sucking air, so yeah it definately works, you cant exactly feel air being sucked without this, its definately routing the suction to the colder air portion... so hey mission accomplished. now to paint it
