O.K., I got my '06 airbox today, the one with the built in velocity stack. It is really much larger and more impresive than I had expected it to be. Looking forward to trying it.

But, while I was looking the airbox over, I bagan to wonder just what that block of gray foam below the air filter panel is for. I had always assumed that it was some kind of a seal of the air filter. But seeing it with the box off the car, it is obvious that the foam doesn't even touch the airfilter at all. It cannot be a seal. So I pulled it out. It is about the size of a half sandwich, gray open cell foam, and it is packed into a hollow chamber at the bottom rear of the airbox. Is is sound deadening to help silence the intake tract??

Does anyone know what this can be for? How about you guys that work at dealerships, what's up with the foam?

I think it has to do with letting water out of the airbox if any gets in there.... but not sure, thats the only thing that comes to mind.

 

it is for sound deadening. when i was n/a, i pulled it out to make more sound. the foam piece works great now to put my tire shine on, which is what i use it for, hahhaa.

 

Here are a couple of photos of the foam. You are looking through the opening where the air enters in the front. The foam is at he bottom in the first photo and removed in photo 2.

It is there for water drainage, period.

 

Does it improve performance by removing it?

 

I cannot detect any difference in sound or performance with the foam in or out, hard to figure out a function. Maybe it does have some purpose associated with water drainage but it's hard to see how.

 

im betting its more for water drainage too, just take it out haha

I actually do notice a slight sound difference with and without the foam. Sounds just slightly "throatier" without the foam. I have pretty sensitive hearing though, so it may or may not be noticeable to others.

 

for those that know, i may be picking up an 06 airbox local in a week or so; i have an '03 and I wanted to know if just the box and, of course, the filter inside, is all I need to take advantage of this whole "velocity stack" concept.
