Default Used Zs' prices...

Hello,

I'm a new member here. My name is Aris. I'm from Greece, but I'm coming to the states this July for an MBA in Malibu/California.

I'm selling my car here in Greece (which is an Audi TT) and I'll have to look for a new one over there that I'll probably keep for a couple of years (exactly the duration of the MBA program). I'm seriously thinking of getting a Z cause I really like its looks and the power shouldn't be bad either. But the looks is the main reason I'm considering it. I don't think you can buy a sportier and nicer looking car at that price.

Anyway, I was looking at some auctions on ebay and I realised that prices vary about from 20K to 30K. However, I found a few auctions that you could buy (buy-it-now) Zs for well under 20K (16-17K), which sounds like a real bargain. And those cars seemed pretty much fine.

Do you guys believe that this is a normal price for a used Z? I'm trying to find a deal that will keep the cost down, as it's gonna be a temporary car for a short period for me. I was just wondering wether I should be more suspicious of such low prices.

BTW, I'm looking for a white coupe. Extras would be welcome.

Thanks and sorry for the crappy english. Take care all of you.

Aris

Greetings Aris!
As a general rule, you can go by the values on www.kbb.com or www.nada.com. Anything else is pure speculation.

Welcome to the forum!

P.S., my step-father is native Greek and owns a Greek restaurant in LosAngeles....You guys have some of the best food on the planet.

Anything around 16-17k with under 50k miles on it likely has a salvage title, so make sure you check that first.

plan on spending at least 20k for a nice 03 04 with low miles...good luck, prices are expected to go up a little bit after the release of the movie this summer.

Thanks a lot for the answers!

kcobean, thank you for the links. I looked into them and it seems that in order to buy a decent base coupe of 2003 with around 50K miles, I'll normally have to pay around 20K, so I'll be looking for cars at around that price. You should definetely give me more details about your step-dad's restaurant! I'd love to visit it and have some nice greek food. Yeah, our kitchen is one of the best and healthiest too (ever heard of mediterranean diet? ).

FreeBaGel, thanks for the advice!

enycepunjabi, ty!

Ztalker, when exactly is the movie expected to be released? I'm planning on getting there in the end of July, so I'd probably manage to find and buy one until mid-August. Would that be soon enough so as to avoid the price increase? TIA

Cozmo, thanks, that gives me hope! I guess it was the base model, right?

Be cautious with eBay. First, buying a car sight unseen is foolish. Second, it is not unusual for a eBay seller to close an auction if the bids are not to his liking. Its also possible to win an auction, contact the seller, and the seller will tell you that the car is no longer available.

I would suggest searching for prices on Autotrader.com. I found the dealers advertising on these sites to be quite competitive, and there was a ton to choose from, across the country. For the past several weeks, I've been searching for deals, and found one locally here in Houston. I purchased an '04 Roadster Touring edition this Saturday. Under 7K miles (!!!), just under $28K. KBB listed this price having a $33K retail value, $27K trade-in value. I feel that I got a pretty good deal, at least I'm happy with it

Welcome Aris and Good Luck to you!! If I were you I would aim at paying around 21k-22k for a Z. Not always the case, but I would be a little worried buying a Z for 16-19k range. If the deal sounds to good to be true, it probably isnt.

Aris should win the nice guy award of the year on my350z.com. This is the first post I have ever seen on this forum where the poster actually thanked every single person who responded in his thread personally. I love it!!!

BEN

Thanks again Ztalker, I guess I'm not gonna get there soon enough...

davidv, I was just looking around at ebay, but on no occasion was I to buy a used car without checking on it in person first. But thanks, I didn't know such things were happening.

03zsmith25, that sounds like a very good deal! That means, I would expect to find a 03 base model with higher mileage at a lower price. Thanks!

ostenm, I'm not familiar with roadsters' prices, but I'm sure that if you look around carefully for some time, you'll definitely come up with a special deal in the end. Thanks for the advice about Autotrader, I'll certainly look into it!

bstansbu, thank you for your wishes and your kind words! Perhaps I'm a little bit more typical. I think it's just a matter of practicality (meaning others are probably more practical than I am). I'll try to stay above 20K for safety reasons then, thanks!

If you don't mind the base model, you can get them for under 20k easily.

You're obviously going to Pepperdine right? It's an awesome campus. Good luck with your MBA.
