I currently have Nismo exhuast so obviously my current Y-pipe is Nismo.
Do you think it's worth swapping the Nismo Y-pipe for JIC Y-pipe?

I'm not sure how much it will help, but I might have to get one just
because I want to get Crawford Hi-flow Cats,
because I've found out that there's fitment issues with Nismo Y-pipe causing the Crawford Cats to crack.

But besides the Cats issue, is JIC that much better than Nismo?
I can tell that my Z's chocking and I need to free up a LOT of flow.

Current mods: JWT Pop Charger, 5/16 plenum spacer, Nismo Exhaust.

Any input/comment would be appreciated.

Only reason I was considering JIC was cuz of fitment issues...

in my experience, if you run any cat without attaching it to that u-shaped crossbar, the cat is much more likely to crack.

 

I'm confused. The Crawford cats are known to crack and you are willing to dish out $450 extra in a gamble to replace a perfectly good part. Why don't you just spend an extra $500 on a better quality high flow cat? Hell, for a thousand dollars, you can almost buy the Nismo cats.

 

Yes they are known to crack, ESPECIALLY used with Nismo Y-Pipe.
There is a thread about it not matching right with the Nismo Y-Pipe,
and even the Owner of Crawford basically don't recommend Nismo with
their product.

 

u can try kinetix HFC? i havnt heard of those cracking w/ nismo Y pipe. You can probably sell ur nismo Y pipe and buy a used JIC.

 

Yes, there is a fitment issue but if you read a few threads on the subject, you will see the solution is there and it's quite simple (washers and spacers by the rear cross brace). Just make sure the cats you have are the more recent type (the "reinforced"). I asked Doug at Crawford and in my case yes, they are reinforced. Excellent customer service BTW.

 

I've got nisom exhaust w/ kinetix cats, installed w/o the oem brace. No fitment/cracking problems here.

 

i know this sounds ignorant but what do you guys think about JIC Y-pipe with Invidia Test Pipes on the stock exhaust? any cracking or other problems?

Does VA has emissions inspections? If so, you'll be removing the test pipes and re-installing stock cats every time you have to pass. Not that the removal/install is such a big deal-it's not-but just a factor to consider, especially if you don't do your own work.
There a more than a few hi-flo cats out there that pass visual as well as sniffer tests e.g. Kinetix, and thus don't require removal/reinstall every year or two. Also, they don't throw a CEL. Lots of test pipes do. So many products, so many options, so many prices. What are you trying to achieve? Maybe best to start w/ your goal in mind and buy parts consistent w/ that goal. Hope this helps a little.

 

BTY, if you have a nismo y-pipe you're looking to discard, I'll take it off your hands for any reasonable price.

 

In my opinion, hte JIC y-pipe is the best one out there today for the 350Z. It's design is as straight forward, and free flowing as you can get. Jeff here on his old orange Z actually swapped out his nismo y-pipe for a JIC and from what he says, he liked the power a bit better.

I doubt it's a HUGE difference, but i think that it would help especially to gain every last bit of power from the car. It's my favorite y-pipe on the market today for the Z/G35. I even had this on my old exhaust setup on my car, and would highly recomend it to anyone.

They are not too expensive (especially for the quality you get with it).

It is my understanding that the Y Pipe outlets diameter should be smaller then the inlet of the exhaust. The JIC Y pipe has a 80MM Outlet, and the Nismo Exhaust has a 76MM Inlet.

I would recommend the Tanabe Y Pipe which looks as free flowing as the JIC and also has the flex joints. The Tanabe Y Pipe has a 70MM outlet, which would bolt up nicely to the 76MM Inlet of the Nismo exhaust.

Im most likely going that route, except with a Fujitsubo exhaust instead. (same 76mm exhaust)

 

Emissions wont be a problem because i have Texas tags therefore a different inspection decal . Getting inspection decals wont be a problem each year (dont ask) . Does the JIC throw a CEL and if they do how do you get rid of it??
