It all depends, weve installed so many NISMO exhausts and even with the NISMO Y-pipe, not all the of them needed washers for the M Brace.

 

how did you find a crack in your dc headers? was this before, or after install? also, did you notice a power loss?

just curious...i have a set of dc's myself and i am thinking about changing out to crawfords

 

yea my Right Crawford cat also cracked recently and it was a pretty BIG crack right at the weld. But a refurbished one was sent out to me promptly because he didnt have any new ones (i now know y after reading previous post). Installed today, so hopefully this one will hold.

 

Is there possibly a relationship between the cats cracking and whether they are running a true dual exhaust, or not? Would this also explain why Nissan used the flex pipe on the OEM exhaust? When one considers that some of the aftermarket setups appear to apply additional weight/stress on the exhaust, the weak link wold obviously be the cat, regardless of the make. JMO.

 

is this thread real old, cause i don't even know where to turn anymore, i am looking into getting high flows and i have the nismo cat back???? what do i do, absolutely don't want rasp and dont' want test pipes, def. want high flows but don't wanna deal with this cracking problem. seems like some get the problem and some don;t

 

I would like to see catelitic converters and test pipes come with a manufactures warranty. Say 5 years. How much would replacements cost the manufacture? It would go a long way helping the buyer.

 

If we look at catback exhaust and catalytic converter and test pipe combinations, there are a 1,000 possibilities. No one could analyse which combination is more reliable than another.

yeah if there was a warranty like that id def. go with that company, how long they usually warranty them for a year?

 

I’ve had Kinetix catalytic converters and Helix test pipes. I don't recall getting a warranty with either.

 

Here is my take on this:

I believe the cracking problem occurs do to improperly tightening the exhaust components. For instance, my friend and I both have the HR engine. Approximately 4 months ago we both ordered a set of Berk HFC's because we liked the fact that they came with support brackets to help prevent cracking.

So we got the HFCs and observed them. The welds were fine and they seemed of good quality, therefore if they crack it is not b/c of poor welds. So next up was installation: Since I am lazy and don't have the time I decided I will take my whole exhaust system (Nismo and Berk combo) and get it installed at the local reputable shop. Vice my friend who decided to install the cats himself in his garage.

So I got my cats installed by the shop, and he also finished up his DIY installation. He admitted it was tough and that reaching the bolts was difficult. He did the install lying on his back. My shop had the benefit of the car-lift.

So just a few weeks ago, his cats cracked. To be specific, it was his header to cat flange..Why? My cats were fine? We both have similar driving habits, neither of us has gone to any track since the install of the cats..We tried to narrow down the possibilities. He said he started hearing an awkward sound as he got on a ramp to get on the freeway..

We both reached an agreement and blamed it on his installations technique. My installers were professionals, now I know that may sound stupid b/c there's no such thing as a professional exhaust install, but you have to be careful. Properly torqueing down the bolts and making sure the exhaust is aligned properly. Making sure that one exhaust component isn't under more stress than another. He also had a tough time getting his O2 sensors out, but my shop didn't.

I'm about 5,000 miles with these cats, and running strong.

 

I do not believe this to be an install issue, rather a flaw in the design of the nismo Ypipe (flex joints.)
My cats cracked after about 7000miles. Another friend with the Nismo exhaust had the exact same problem.

However, our failures were not located at the Header/Cat flange. Our cracks were located exactly where the support tabs were located.

I honestly do not believe this to be an issue with the cat design (in our case BERK hfc's) rather a problem with the nismo ypipe.

*I would like to add that Bryan@BERK was great when dealing with our warranty issues. I would not hesitate to purchase another product.*

 

my UR hfc/aam y-pipe/nismo = still running strong, ( lol only 600 milies now )

also is there any rasp with the cat and exhaust combo.

 

Dude just search youtube and listen to sound clips. Rasp has a broad definition, some hate while others say it's overrated..

 

trust me ive searched on youtube for hours, it isn't a very good idea imo. . it doesn't give a good example 90% of the time because of crappy cameras and overall just doesn't sound like that in person. so if anyone would like to comment on if they have rasp or not anywhere in the rpm range id be glad to hear of it. i personally hate rasp

Tylerxfire - with our HFC's your get a 1 year warranty. Any cracked HFC's within that time period you send them back and we'll give you a brand new set.

If you sell enough of any product you're going to run into a few defects. But you guys can rest assured that we'll be here to back you up should you need to "test" how good our warranty process is.

 

just to add to that...i have the fuji y pipe and ti catback and my crawford cats also cracked at the support bracket. i had them repaired a couple of times and have gone back to stock.

 

the new ones are the ones with the brackets right, and is it the price on the website or is it a better price to members or anything like that, can i get a price quote to 13357 for a 03 z
