Changing out the OEM Y-Pipe and/or Cats is your best bet.

would just changing out the Y pipe to aftermarket make it sound raspy? Ive never thought of doing that with the stock exhaust. I know the test pipes make it pretty raspy, but has anyone heard the stock exhuast with Ypipe? Im really considering this now, just need to know what it sounds like!!

From what I've heard, it will sound fine in the lower to mid RPM range but there will definitely be some rasp up top unless you change out your exhaust. I guess it really depends on the type of Y-Pipe and/or Cat/Test Pipe combination you get. This is just a suggestion since he mentioned he wanted to keep his OEM exhaust. If you were to get an aftermarket system, I'd suggest Fujitsubo, Nismo, or Borla would be closest to what you are looking for.

stillen's y-pipe works good with stock exhaust....sound stays the same at idle but screams at higher RPMs.

Actually, Nissan had Fujitsubo make their Nismo exhaust. So in a way, it's a Fujitsubo exhaust that is just re-branded Nismo. A lot of Nismo parts are similar to this where they have other companies produce their parts. Fujitsubo then made their own exhaust called the Legalis-R. If you look at the two, the designs are very similar with a few differences on the Y-Pipe & exhaust tips. Between Nismo & Fujitsubo though, the Nismo is a bit louder whereas the Fujitsubo is a tad mellower. The Fujitsubo is known to be one of the more subtle sounding exhaust systems on the market. Both, however, growl at WOT. I have heard both side by side at the shop & everyone pretty much had the same impression.

There is way too much discussion in this forum about sound, and to little about performance.

If you replace the catalytic converters or Y-pipe (cannot locate a X-pipe), there is no way to guarantee that the exhaust will sound exactly the same as before.
