Default Sound of my Z

I would like to do some exhaust/intake upgrades to my 06 Z, but I don't want it when I am done to sound like all those crappy riced out Civics that sound like go carts on steroids. I want it to be a true low growl more of similar to the muscle cars (mustangs etc.) What direction should I go to get a sound more like that. Thanks in advance.

The best way is to go to a meet and hear them in person, sound clips tend to not be very accurate. https://my350z.com/forum/intake-exhaust/152824-giganto-list-of-all-exhaust-sound-clips-pics-member-pics-sticky.html
check that thread out to start off.

Agree with GMZ. I've gotta say though, very few of our cars sound like "true muscle cars" just 'cause the V6 doesn't give all the rumble some of those big V8's can give, but you can get a nice exotic tone from it. There are some guys with cams that get a nice "lub-lub" out of it, but to my knowledge there are no cams available for rev-ups atm. Almost any combo of intake/exhaust can help give a good, strong, non-riced out civic tone to the car though. In fact, I would have sworn up until a week ago that the VQ just couldn't be made to sound like rice, but I learned otherwise. I was standing outside my hotel in Layton, UT last week and I heard what I swore to be a civic spooling up just to spool up through what sounded like the typical, tinny coffee can exhaust. I looked up and was really disappointed to see a G go by. I'm guessing that had more to do with test pipes than anything, but man was I let down.

(lol, I had 2 disappointments in Z's/G's while I was there. I saw a pretty nice wide-body kitted Z that completely blew the look by keeping a typical wheel offset. Had the wb hanging way past the rims. Hopefully that one is just in process of completion, not finished like that)

Just my two cents, but I have the Borla True Dual Exhaust and JWT Popcharger combo and I LOVE it!!!! Makes me not want to go FI because of how good it sounds. No rice at all, lots of deep growling though!!!!!

Good luck!

V6s can't sound like the ricers if they wanted to. Get anything you want. They all sound good on V6s.

True dual for the : Wha wha wha wha wha sound

Y-pipe for the : WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA sound.

Pick one

The borla is a great choice but I prefer the NISMO...its a very low key almost stock exhaust but when you get on it...VRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMM w/crawford high flow cats and nismo headers hehe...hey does nismo make high flow cats for the VQ?

borla td but you have to have other breathing mods to get the most out of the sound. borla td with all other stock breathing mods has a nice deep tone but very quiet and tame. with hfc's or test pipes + intake + plenum upgrade = deep aggressive, exotic V8 like growl. love it. it doesnt have any of the honda BEEEEEEEEE BEEEEEEEE sound to it.

As long as you have some sort of resonator in it and there isn't any rasp it sounds good.

I keep thinking that all of these exhausts sound tinny and dare I say "like rice", but then I started thinking that maybe that's just how engines start to sound when they spin around 7000 RPM? Most of the sound clips I listen to sound pretty good when the car is just starting to get wound up and then in the upper rev range I hear that raspy/tinny/higher-pitched waaaAAAAAAAAAA! and I think it just has to do with the characteristic of an engine spinning that fast. I guess you'd never hear that sort of thing in a V8 muscle car because their redlines are quite a bit lower. Maybe it is time for me to embrace this VQ engine and get an obnoxiously loud exhaust!

SRY110. If you have never been to a sports car race where the engines are small displacement 4 liters and less. They are wound tight and the sound of the Z is real close to them at higher RPMs. Formula 1 and Indy/CART engines go to 14000+ RPM and they all scream no rumble there at all at high RPM. Corvette 427's at the LeMans Series still sound like American Iron due to the extra 2 cylinders and the type of exhaust and rev limits. The sound of a properly tuned V6 with good exhaust and intakes grows on you so get the ones that sound best to you and enjoy.

I've had the opportunity to hear the Tanabe Hyper Medallion in person with a Y-pipe, and it sounded beautiful. Very deep growl, and not obnoxiously loud.

Sexy:

Hopup has the hyper for sale pretty cheap..now to just convince the wifey

The VQ is a very unique sounding motor and the only one that comes close is Toyota's new 3.5 liter engine. I really like the look of the new Touring Medalion, but haven't heard it in person yet.

The low revving american motors are very different in nature...not to mention being V8's. High revving V8's are still high pitched. Toyota F1 motor anyone? Spun at 10K+ rpm, and it'll still be going bading ding ding bom bom bom

Actually I think this exhaust sounds close to a v8/ mustang gt, and it's on group buy right now
