Hey i'm trying to do a muffler delete on my Z too. sounds hot.

Question is about cost tho. Most people here are saying it cost between like 60-100 bucks.

A local weld shop told me that the process would either take a day or two or he would have to remove the whole exhaust and it would cost a lot.

What the ****? Does that make any sense?

Can anyone describe the process to me so I can explain it to the welder? Or does anyone know any tristate weld shops that could do this?

haha whoever told you that is just trying to squeez more money out of ya. all you have to do is remove the stock muffler which is held on by three hangers and two bolts which are connected to the rest of the exhaust. After that is removed all he has to do is route straight pipes from there. No need to disconnect the entire exhaust. I went to a local welding shop and he did it in about 45 minutes and charged me $55. All he did was use the old rubbers from two of the existing hangers and cut and rewelded my old tips back on. sounds amazing imho.

I have done it recently,

+1 for immediate pics

It sounds great! it is slightly louder than I expected, (my girlfriend will disagree, its A LOT louder apparently) although when not under heavy load, or even just medium load, it is actually really quiet; she cant even hear it...

I read about people doing this, but was on the fence about it until I talked to this really good welder, and he said he personally has done the mod to about 45 350Z'z! He also talked how he welded his diff in his 240 a while back and it hasn't broken under the stresses of the occasional drift events. On top of that he worked at a local prestigious muffler shop.

I decided to get it done, and those pics are the end result.

I removed the muffler before getting it fabricated, and OMG the rubber hangers were heinous to remove. They looked like the original set, and were more closely related to cement...after many tries with everything soapy, oily, and viscus, a blowtorch that I had handy was the ULTIMATE tool (for future ref & should you choose to buy new ones)

Why spend the 300-400 dollars on the homemade y pipe? If you really want a good sound out of your stock exhaust and keep the look of the stock exhaust, put spacers where your muffler and down-pipe attach. Ill post some pictures. You get the same sound as straight piping the car basically and you can do it for free. I just took some steel piping and cut two half inch sections and slid them on to the bolts.. the bolts are long enough to go all the way back through and you can still put both nuts back onto the screws along with the ground wire. I would imagine that it would sound no different then adding the y pipe. Here's a picture with only one spacer ( this is while I was installing it) http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._6943703_n.jpg

Here's a picture of stock exhaust with the spacers... No change at all with exterior look ( dont mind the riced out z.. it was at a car show) http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._3105129_n.jpg

Oh yeah! Here's a video! I took it on my phone and the sound quality sucks but it still gives it justice... <object width="176" height="144" ><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="movie" value="http://www.facebook.com/v/1545890973447" /><embed src="http://www.facebook.com/v/1545890973447" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="176" height="144"></embed></object>

how much should this cost for the removal, fabrication of y pipe, and install?

I don't understand whether it's going to cost me 60-100 bucks with y-pipe included or just for install.

In the second case, what's a fair price for a shop to fabricate me a y-pipe?

The removal is very easy. Price would depend on the shop you're using. Fair y-pipe price would be in the $100-$350 range depending on quality.

Thank you. What quality is stock or would you recommend for the y-pipe, stainless steel? And how much would that cost.

I'm trying to go in knowledgeable of the prices.

Would you also happen to know typical install price of a plenum spacer?

definitely go with stainless steel (304). i don't think the piping on the stock system was stainless but honestly i can't remember. i haven't had that car since 2006.

plenum spacer is also pretty easy and should only take about an "hour" according to a shop. all of this stuff you are mentioning is easy to do except weld up your own exhaust (unless you're a welder).

Well I just read through this entire thread and figured I would bring it back from the dead once again! I am definetly considering this, I love the sound of it when it's done! Just have to search around locally and see what shop can do the best work. I definetly want the pipes hidden because I really don't want people behind me to see the pipe hanging there. However if a shop can't do it right and the way I want it I'll stick with the stock exhaust instead.
