Welcome.

The sound of various cat-back exhausts have been described as...

mean
low rumble
growl

and exotic. All terribly subjective and of little value. Listen before buying.

i have Borla before and they sound great with great price (around $900) but after awhile, it starts to rattle. I change to HKS ( around $1300) and love it. The sound is different. As for hp gain, you will get the same for most of exhaust.

If you like the stock sound, get the nismo it just makes it louder and meaner. Check out these 2 links.

How is the drone on the exhausts mentioned, particularly the HKS?

My Z is on its' third exhaust and I'd recommend the Stillen or Nismo if your car is going to remain normally aspirated. They're both slightly "throatier" than stock and the materials, design, build quality, and sound are excellent. I was able to make over 500whp with the Stillen dual and test pipes without any negatives(buzzing, droning, rasping).
I avoided the Borla because I felt they used too many segments of pipe, and I saw one where one of the hangars had broken off. Watch for used exhausts in the classifieds and save a bundle!

And I should add:

Great
Meaner
Deeper
So good
Brutal
and
Throatier. All terribly subjective and of little value. Listen before buying.

Nismo FTW i love mine no problems not the loudest aftermarket, but imo the best sounding. Resonated test pipes on the way hopefully will make it a little louder

D*mn, I slipped and used "throatier". It's off to the woodshed for me......That's exactly why I was trying to reference quality, rather than focusing exclusively on something as subjective as sound. I agree with davidv completely, you have to listen to them. I bought my APS exhaust sight-unseen before it cleared customs. It's too loud for my taste.

LOL. Throatier passed my spell checker. Who would have thought?

I have the Nismo and Love it. It sounds very good not too loud and just the right tone. It sounds really mean at WOT.

I've listened to a few and at the end of the day I went NISMO. Awesome exhaust, not too loud. Sounds a bit like a sport bike in the tunnels.

Best, deepest, richest sound I've ever heard was Tanabe medalion touring.
