I want to break or at least come close to the 300 mark. I wanna hang with c5's. I think I should be able to do this with cams.
any thoughts on this? I know alot of you guys think it can't be done but I'm an optimist.

thanks rick. Everyone seems to shy away from cams though. I know they're expensive in themselves and then expensive to install as well. But, these issues aside, do they cause reliability or driveability issues? and if so, in what way?

The real driveability issues come into play with idle quality, which is fixable, and gas mileage issues - if you go somewhat radical other than the standards.
I think cams are a great addition to our cars, especially if your going FI.

I've added headers, intake and exhaust and pulled less than a stock Z on the same dyno on the same day. I know some folks argued for a reflash over a UTEC but since I don't know what else I might do in the future I'm probably going to invest in the UTEC. Look for my post I put here a few minutes ago for more details.

I think he needs a tune to be at 270 or so whp with his mods
Of course the exhaust may be more restrictive than say an HKS unit
If I had the cash burning a hole in my pocket
Rev-Up motor
MREV2 + spacer - 10whp $700
Pop charger w/ air box (cut down the heat soak) - 5whp $100
Longtube headers (Used if you can find them) - 10whp $800
Dual exhaust --- Probably the HKS setup - 12-15whp $1200
Cams 272 or so nothing too crazy (Have a friend help with install) 15whp $1000
100 Shot $700
UTEC (USED) 1100 w/tuning
Figure 290-300whp NA and 400whp or so whp on the bottle (track days) That comes to $5600 total with at least $1300 coming back when you sell to go FI
I think those mods would be a nice setup for a street Z while giving you a "one bite a time" mod list instead of all at once turbo setup IMHO

I picked up 19 peak just from the UTEC.....after all my other mods. As far as the whole pro/con with the UTEC....much of it depends on the tuner. Iam very pleased with mine and it made the biggest noticeable difference in the performance of the car. The low/mid range torque gain was significant.

Ideally for NA power and safety, you want to be at 12.8:1 A/F or just at 13...your real close, but I haven't seen a dyno with A/F to help otherwise. you have to look at the power band and see where the A/F ratio dips and peaks.
If you brought the ratio down the 12.9-13 - you could see about 8-10 HP more. That's worth $300 and a tune to me...

I have all the AAM bolt-ons and ECU reflash and love it. You say you are a newb and already getting a lot of mods so if I were you I would probably go for the UTEC and just get Mike(if you're going with AAM) or Shariff (closer to you) to tune the car. I would be willing to bet that you will get cams and/or go FI someday and buying the UTEC now will just save money down the road.

I would like to do cams and a SC but I'm just to worried about (and in need of) reliability, so unfortunately I think my modding has to stop after headers.
