If the cats stay, is it worth an aftermarket y-pipe?

Default If the cats stay, is it worth an aftermarket y-pipe?

I have popcharger, 5/16`` spacer, stock cats, and a JIC single Ti (on the way). If I`m not willing to ditch the cats for tp`s or hi-flo`s, would the addition of an aftermarket y-pipe give me...more/about/less than 5whp? Dynodynamics said I was 243whp last time with the first two mods on board.

Great deals so far, so I`m not willing to trash the cost/benefit ratio. If I won`t notice the y-pipe`s effect on the Popcharger/spacer/JIC, then I won`t get it, of course.

Anyone have a line on a JIC y-pipe in case I go that route?

Thanks!

I would just as soon begin at the beginning where the exhaust gas leaves the motor: the OEM exhaust manifold (the ugly things on the floor). They are terribly restrictive. In other words the choke point is at the very beginning of the exhaust system.

I used to have Crawford HFC with the Nismo exhaust.
I put the stock cats back on(Crawfords cracked), and
I decided to put on JIC Y-Pipe to replace the Nismo mid-pipe while at it.

The result?
I lost a lot of low end torque.
The factory cats was too restrictive and caused increased backpressure.
There's no point of getting better flowing Y-Pipe if you're choked up at the cats.

My case may have been more severe because I have UTEC and
it was tuned with the HFCs.
So my advice is if you're gonna get aftermarket Y-Pipe, get HFC or TP.

If you're going to replace the stock y-pipe, you might as well replace the stock cats also with an HFC or test pipes. This will complement the intake mods you did (popcharger & spacer). In my case, besides replacing the stock cats & y-pipe, I went ahead and replace my stock manifolds also. By doing so, I "opened up" the restrictive areas in the stock exhaust system.

A y-pipe will still help even if you don't get anything else...but since the Cats are more restrictive, it won't make as big as a difference - I'd say go for it, you'll already be under the car to install the exhaust, it wouldn't take much more to do the Y-pipe too.
