Default y-pipe modificatin

Hi,

This is my first post. I have been following the forum for about a year and I have finally joined in. I need advice as to what to do.

I want more power out of my stock exhaust. I want to change to an after market y-pipe. I also want to keep the exhaust sound as stock as possible. If I change the y-pipe only, would I run in to any performance issues? Also, My budger is low, so I'm only planning to spend about 400 for the y-pipe. Which one should I get?

I welcome any information about this modification.

Danny

Check the link...it might help...
https://my350z.com/forum/intake-exhaust/246076-y-is-a-400-y-pipe-better-than-a-130-y-pipe.html

If you want the most power from your stock exhaust a y-pipe is not the solution...Test Pipes (to noisy) or HFC's (pricey, but stay close to stock sound) would be the solution. Y-pipes are an essential though once you install TP's or HFC IMO though...its all a package

Default y-pipe

I was told by vendors that the power gains in the exhaust systems were mainly created by the y-pipe.
Is there any evidence of this?

Here are pics of the oem Y-pipe without the protective heat shielding.

Notice the crush bends and and overall design including the merge area.

Some demensional info for the oem Y-pipe
ID at the point where the pipe bolts to the cat conv 50mm or fraction below 2"

ID at the point where it hooks up to the B-pipe 61mm or 2 3/8"

Remember that most aftermarket Y-pipes use 65mm inlet diameters off of the cats and have a 80mm diameter at the B-pipe connection.

If your not modding the rest of the exhaust. It's a bad idea to have a 80mm pipe connect directly to a 61mm oem B-pipe, you'll end up with about a 1/4" ringed wall directly in the flow path. Either use the Tanabe Y-pipe with it's 70mm output or buy the Japtrix B pipe which has a 80mm inlet that taper's down to 65mm when it connect's to the muffler. Or have a exhaust shop weld in transition part to the front of your oem B-pipe to smoothly blend 80mm down to 65mm. http://www.drgas.com/store/product.p...9&cat=1&page=1

Save up a few bucks and get something you know you won't regret later. I am super pleased with my Berk HFCs and Motordyne Y-pipe.
