Default Metallic Fluttering from Standard Y pipe- weird. .

Hello

im after abit of help. Ive had a weird noise when coasting down between 3000-2000rpm, like a card in a bike spoke. It does it when stationary, rev it up, and let the revs drop and you can hear it but not to prolonged. So, when i was having the tracking done last week, i managed to narrow it down to the Y-Pipe, under that weird metal cover where the 2 pipes meet to form one. It has some nuts on it, i don t know whats underneath, maybe someone else does, but it all seems very odd. What is there at that junction that would be causeing that noise? Blowing?

Maybe its time to get a JIC Y-Pipe to complement my Fuji exhaust

cheers in advance

Jamie

Well the car is an import from Japan, so i dont know what the previous owner could have done but, as far as i know its only got a Fujisubo Legalis-R on it exhaust wise. The Y-Pipe is certainly stock.

Saying that though, after listening to a few other peoples noises on you-tube via the test pipe problem thread i am starting to think i might. My Fujiitsubo definelty doesnt sound like others ive heard, and also, i got a very strong sweet/odd/exhaust smell when i come to a stop, if i have the window open when i come to a stop, and i hear someone mention 'smell' in the other thread. . . .

How could i tell if it has test pipes anyway?

cheers

Jamie

From the engine, you have headers. They connect to the test pipes, or stock catalytic converters. Those connect to the Y-pipe. Check them out....if they have the brown and silver look to them and look like grubs ten those are probably OEM cats. If they are straight pipes or straight pipes with resonators they are test pipes.

Have you checked all of the connecting bolts to see if any came loose?

I just put TurboXS test pipes on my car with the Nismo headers and Nismo catback. The ***** rasps like a **** on acceleration from 2k up to like 4.5k rpm. It really rasps when decelerating, just like the OP said, from 3k back down to 2k it sounds like pieces of metal slapping back and forth.

Before the test pipe install I had no rasp, sounded great. I may put the oe cats back on if I get sick of it..

OP: is it rasp you hear? If so, it may be a test pipe issue, your cats may be breaking up, there could be a crack somewhere......

A fluttering sound from under the car is indicative of a header to engine block leak.

thing is, this problem is so so common im starting to think its not as easy as 'just a leak'.I mean look at all the people who have justhad exhausts fitted and testpipes saying they have this. . . . .Why would we all have the exact same sound?

is there a scientific explanation maybe, pressure waves or something?

check pc

OK well i have checked and i DO INDEED HAVE TEST PIPES

Well, that explains why im a victim of the noise. . . .

It doesnt explain why its happening in the first place though? I really keen to get to the bottom of this though cause it sounds. . . . . cack. . .
