There is an easy solution to this all. Get you a few crispy creme donuts and put them in your glove box. When a cop pulls you over, throw it out the window as far from your car as you can. The "eatasmuchakis donutis" species will be hypnotized by the sweet aroma from the donut, and forget why he pulled you over.

The only difference many times between a carb legal exhaust and one that is not is a piece of paper

Exhausts have nothing to do with the environment --- the cats take care of that part

The noise emitting from the tail pipe is hardly ever recorded which leaves "loud" up to the finely tuned (NOT) ears of Traffic Enforcement aka tax collectors

CARB is set up as a money maker for Cali....right now they are trying to get cars that are older than 1974 smogged yearly...why you ask...to raise more money in fees

How much money would it take to get a carb'd 68 small block to pass? More than the owner is probably willing to spend = museum piece or classic car off to the junker

I hate Cali's law on exhaust because it makes no logical sense...even when you buy a smog legal exhaust and have proof you can still get a ticket....on top of that you have to go to the court house and pay a fine even though you have a legal exhaust ....I had to do it years ago...do they ever check the decibel reading...no...do they really care...no....all they want is your money and will enforce their "law" on you to get it

There is a reason the speed limit in oregon is 55.....$$$ from traffic stops
Cali decibel law I believe is 92 decibels of which a cop is supposed to know how close a car is with his ears...riiiiiiiiiiight

An exhaust shouldnt need carb approval because its from the CATs back....never changes emmissions....but then exhaust MFGs wouldnt have to pay thousands upon thousands in testing fees to get it approved....just to have their customers pulled over and told its still illegal regardless of CARB approval (still pay fix it ticket fines + time)

Even if you get Nismo youll still be pulled over and given a fix it ticket...

So wasting your time buying a "smog" legal exhaust isnt the best idea....suck it up or go back to stock....Cali cops are tax collectors and hate imports....

To them - its too low, ticket....exhaust....ticket...tint....ticket.....pop your hood

No matter what you do the vehicle code is being written by idiots in Sacremento who hate cars and have never owned a modd'd vehicle....will they care ...not really...it makes them money

End rant --- dealt with this for far too long

Everything you said is absolutely true. I've researched all this stuff myself as well.

This is somewhat an urban myth. In reality, a cop can tell if the donut is really fresh from a distance of at least 75 feet, judging by smell alone.

This tactic might work if you bought a couple of fresh crispy cremes every day, just in case, but in the long run, it is cheaper to buy a good radar jammer or just get breast implants and learn to cry on demand.

Additionally, learn to slip him a Starbuck's Gift Certificate with your driver's license and insurance.

I agree, the cop was just hassling you. The worst its gonna be is a fix-it ticket.

Except for test pipes though....sometimes guys who do exhaust go test pipes at the same time.....no cats = $1000 fine and possible tow

For just exhaust....doubt it

I have nothing against cops but seriously, SDPD needs to get the *** off the ***** of these modified cars.

Ok so they stopped organized street racing. Kudos! But what is the deal? Not enough other serious crimes to stop in San Diego?

*true story*
I was cruising like 5mph in a parking lot to grab some lunch at a restaurant one time. Cop was walking away from his patrol car with his partner. (hand on belt) He kinda stops by my door and raises out his hand for me to stop.

"Son, you know I could write you up RIGHT now for that modified muffler..."

Me: "It's actually stock sir."

His partner chuckles and says, "Knew it, 'told you it was factory equipped."

I mean i respect SDPD, keep doing your job, but wtf?
Gawd knows what kind of tough time he would have given me, had I been pulled over for some other minor traffic violation. Is that the kind of b.s. overzealous mentality we have to deal with from a typical SD officer?

I guess this is reality now. You know the funny part is i can't imagine them stopping and harassing a guy in his 30's or 40's who is a car enthusiast and happens to be driving a mustang or a vette. They would probably say something like "hey nice ride there bubba, what you got under there a V8 with a blower?"

WELL ...Right after i did some donuts in the parking lot i decided to refuse to pull over, thats when i lead police through a high speed chase where speeds exceeded 165 mph. When he pulled me over he noticed my exhaust was an aftermarket exhaust and decided to harrass me because i was acting a fool with illegal parts on my car!

Seriously though, i was driving like any normal person except exceeding the speed limit by a whopping 10 mph (something everybody does everyday) , i wasent doing anything crazy. The cop just didn't happen to like my exhaust or my car
