Default Intake Manifold Cover Water Line

The shop manual shows a water line connecting to the intake manifold collector cover just behind the electronic throttle. Anyone know what this water line is for and where it goes??

Thanks.

This line is intended for operation in colder climates.....it's meant to heat up the intake manifold with warm coolant.....my MR2 has a similar deal on the throttle body.....its in line with the coolant system and the heater core

Thanks. A water line on the intake didn't seem to make sense. For awhile I thought maybe the VQ was capable of spitting water molecules and burning the freed up hydrogens. I take it there's a jacket around the throttle body ? and the water heats the intake air or is it really circulating around the manifold itself somehow. My chevy has a exhaust gas recirc across the intake manifold (but I removed the valve as it was badly rusted when I had a new exhaust installed).

I'm not quite sure if its just at the TB inlet, or throughout the manifold......but you've got me thinking that i should modify this.... since i live in california the LAST thing i need is a heated manifold

Someone on this board disconnected that water line, or maybe added a manual shut off valve. I can't remember who it was. I think they also said that they had done the same thing on previous cars they had owned. Hopefully, they'll read this thread and describe it better...

A manual valve would be nice. You could turn it back on in the winter.

I figured out who it was with the forum search. It was SKiDaZZLe.

Here's the thread where he talks about his "throttle body water bypass."

Default water inlet

Thanks for the updated pics skidazzle and great job under the hood. From the pics, it almost looks like the water is recirculating through the mouth of the intake cover and not inside of a jacket, which seems impossible.

The whole design intent seems perplexing to me. At startup the water is cold, so it's not heating anything. After the engine heats up, I would guess it is fairly warm under the hood. Why would you then need to heat the throttle body and intake air?? Also, why install a CAI, if that recirc system heats up the throttle body and the intake air?

Maybe the intake manifold gets hot like the block and the line is designed to cool it just like it cools the rest of the motor. Maybe taking it off is a bad thing.

Hmmmmm. You might be on to something Mr. badaydah head. I'm going to look through the cooling system part of the shop manual to see if there's a reference. If all else fails, I'll call Nissan and see if there is an engineer around who knows what it's for.
