If I'd have heard one person say that the NISMO was louder and higher pitched, I would have jumped all over the Medalion Tourings, because those are the best looking pipes out there and are the ones I really wanted in the first place.

Also, no one ever mentions that the NISMO has an oval tip, not round. In the pictures it looks round.

I guess I'll now be the proud owner of two exhaust systems for my Z.

I briefly alluded to it here too:

No rasp at all! Just made the fujitsubo sound so much deeper. Rev's like a motherf**ker, compared to before. I am so happy with my HFC's?

I actually did read a couple of your threads!

But you have a different exhaust from the Touring and the links were broken. I was searching specifically for the term "Touring Medalion" instead of "Tanabe," because Tanabe makes so many different exhausts.

I really do love the sound of both exhausts (NISMO and Tanabe), but the NISMO is just much, much louder than people led me to believe. It also has that "hollow" Mustang sound. I hate that.

I believe removing the resonator does create a little more rasp than leaving it in. I had my Nismo on with Helix test pipes and it was awful so I had to put back on the stock cats, now with the Crawford high flows everything is right again. It adds a deeper and more full tone to the exhaust. Hope this helps.

Link to my Nismo exhaust with stock cats, resonator removed, on the dyno. I think under load it has more rasp than it does just revving.

mmmm yeah now I remember our conversation, where I told you to go buy a digital camera so we could get some sound clips

...and where i responded by saying; Be a man! grow a set and get'er done!

I've gone through exactly the same thing you are going through now. You've come to the Jedi Council for advice, and i'm telling you this is your easiest solution

I'm in the process of a motor build with a big single turbo, and though most end up going with the bigger 3" TD exhausts, I've oped to stick with the Fujitsubo. I love the quiet deep sound too much.

I've got a way I plan to get around any issues of backpressure with higher boost. I can't wait, it's going to sound NICE.

Are you going to install some sort of a dump/bypass for when the boost is cranked up?

I've been doing some research and trying to find emperical results, rather than, "Dude, that sounds like ***!"

Here is what I've found:

The stock exhaust is rated at 81 db at idle, and 89 db at 3000 rpm.
The NISMO exhaust measures in at 84 db at idle, and 95 db at 3000 rpm.

That is a difference of 6 db!!! That's a LOT considering that every increase of 3 db doubles the accoustic energy. So the NISMO projects 4 times the accoustic energy of the OEM.

On the other hand, Tanabe rates the Touring series at <93 db throughout the rpm range. That being the case, we'll consider the Touring to be 92 db to keep it simple. That is twice as much accoustic energy as stock at 3000 rpm, and half as much as the NISMO! Yikes!

It feels better having some emperical data to work with. Now, does anyone know anything about the notes or octaves of the different exhausts? It would be nice to have some emperical data on that too.

Btw, I just took a short ride in the Z. The NISMO is kinda growing on me.
