I don't think thats the case.

Or else the Z/G exhaust tone would change by adding another passenger & cargo to it.

It's all in the longer piping.

I've thought that a few times before, when a G's driven by me while I'm stopped. I think it is a little deeper/louder.

I'm getting a Nismo soon regardless.

I'd say it was the longer pipes too, the G35 has a more pronounced note.

You hear more throaty motor on the Z, but less of the exhaust note. Seems as if the Z has less back-pressure on the pipes.

On the G35, FX35, and 350Z, are they the same muffler at the rear? If not, what is the difference in their muffler/piping size? Are they all 2.5"?

Also by any chance has anyone opened up the muffler to see what the piping looks like inside? I'm very interested in knowing this.. Thanks!!

Could have alot to do with the INTAKE as well.

The Z's a tad more free-flowing (z-tube) causing less back pressure on the pipes? Just my guess.

When I changed from the stock-box to the JWT Popcharger, I noticed the start-up/idle wasn't as deep as it use to be, like less air was being pushed through the muffler all at once.
But the mid-to-upper-rpm throttle range become more throaty and pronounced.

The tip lenghts (not sure on diameter) are different. The G's are longer than the Z's and I'm guessing that the Fx's are a little bit longer than the G's tips. The G's mid pipe is approx. 6 inches longer than the Z's. W/ the longer tips, and the b pipe, it's gonna sound a little bit deeper no matter what the exhaust. I'm pretty sure that A G owner w/ a Fuji exhaust will have a tad bit deeper exhaust note than a Z w/ a Fuji exhaust, for instance.

The very first mod for many G owners is a Z tube w/ the drop in filter. And the intake is affecting the cabin noise more than the exhaust note from the outside.

ok cool, so it is the same muffler with diff. length piping. any idea what the inside looks like? The reason i stay asking this is because here is what i want to do somtime in the future: I have an 04 TL with a custom hks exhaust, i want to take the rear muffler off the Z and use it as a midpipe to get that growl plus smoother start-up. i'm just not sure which way is better to mount to get maximum flow. would it be better flipped horizontal? any comments/advice? its not to scale btw...

Honestly, I would go with something else. There is no guarantee how it would sound in that situation and the stock muffler is HEAVY.

You would be dropping from a 3 inch pipe to a 2.5 inch pipe through the muffler. It would cause a small restriction and some turbulance, but I feel a couple of ponies if a fair trade for the note you seek.

On the other hand, the outcome will be unpredictable, due to the acceleration of the exhaust gases through the muffler, followed by a slow-down in velocity immediately afterwards. That may cause some very unpredictable (and unintended) accoustic consequences.

This is your chance to be a pioneer. It may sound 10x better than OEM while flowing better. This is a cheap experiement and I say go for it, as long as you report the results back here!

Sound-wise, do you guys think the g35 coupe exhaust sounds the same or better than the z? The reason i ask this is because i am thinking about taking out the 350z exhaust and putting in a g35 exhaust. will this cause performance problems? Im not into those aftermarket exhaust that are obnoxiously loud. Thanks alot
The reason why it sounds different is that the G35 exhaust is longer. The G exhaust wont fit on a Z.

Please re-read the post to which I was responding:

The piping into the muffler is 2.5 inches. I may be mistaken, but I believe the HKS he is referring to has 3.0" piping, therefore he'd be causing a bottle-neck at the muffler inlet.

If you really want one, post up in the appropriate regional forum. Stock exhausts are everywhere, someone will probably give one to you for free just to get rid of it.

Good start! No bottleneck, anyway.

I'll be interested to see the results of this rather unorthodox (but creative) experiement. I hope it succeeds; we need more pioneers. Good luck and keep us posted!
