Just got my inspection today. Passed the sniffer with test pipes. I thought I would have to pay the guy off but guess my car is running pretty clean.

Do they actually do a sniff test?

for '96 and later (OBDII) most states simply do a download from the ECU.

My SVT Focus passed in cali with the ORP installed. Thats was a shock , Nevada all they do is hook up to your OBDII port and if you have no faults or CEL your good.

Ah yes! Good old Florida. No inspections and no emissions testing!

Leading the way to a cleaner tomorrow.

Then I would be almost certain that he simply connected his terminal to the OBDII port and downloaded the ECU data.

As i said, most, if not all, states do not do sniffer tests on OBDII ('96+) cars.

Here is a link to the official Texas test procedure.

As i suspected, it is just a download from the OBDII port. the sniffer test is not done on '96+ vehicles.

You didn't pass the sniffer. In Texas, they just download the codes from an OBD2 system. Only older OBD1 cars go up on the dyno with a probe in the pipe. If you have the codes programmed out for your test pipes, or you just didn't have any, then you'll pass without a problem, assuming they don't do the visual underneath like they are supposed to.

Well it has already been said a couple times, they don't sniff 96+...just read the computer for codes. They are supposed to do a visual inspection but they don't...my 98 firebird was definately not legal and they passed it. It had longtubes, not cats and barely an exhaust. They plugged it into the computer....which we edited the codes out of...and it came back clean so they passed me. The cam in the car was so huge it idled at 1300rpm, barely idled.

I have an 87 Turbo Regal that passes the sniffer with test pipes, so it can be done...it's a special tune for inspections.
