350z Muffler Disconnection (MUCH LOUDER & MEANER sound)
who can tell me the diameter of the pipe leading to the muffler? I am going to take mine off for an event this weekend and want to run a straight pipe, but won't ahve time to do anything after I get it off. So I am tryign to get a shop to make me one before I go out tomorrow night to wrench on the car.
Thanks for your help.

I've been tinkering with the pipe setup here for a little while. I've decided to actually loose the 2nd muffler all together and go with 03daytonablue's approach of having a pipe fabricated with stock exhuast tips, or as close as I can get to them. Like many have mentioned, the car does get an even greater powerful tone with the removal of the 2nd muffler, and interestingly enough, it's not overly loud where you would easily get pulled over for it. I'm just looking for a shop that can yank the muffler for me (Great American was worried about *Legal* implications). I was trying to remove the muffler yesterday without lifting the car and yea.... it didn't happen lol. It's crazy how many parts there are to the 350z's exhaust! I mean you could probably remove both mufflers and still have more than enough back pressure in the piping to not hurt performance (if that really would). With getting a straight pipe fabbed the sound should be pushed back to the rear of the car past the cabin even though it aint actually that much louder inside
.
I'll double check the link and I definately am trying to acquire a better MIC to record some better clips for you guys! I better get back to searching for a shop here in Colorado, l8trz all!

(I should have enough time to get a clip this weekend posted, along with getting my muffler removed!

Allright every1,
I'm still using my ultra crappy laptop MIC, BUT, I did up the sampling rate to 44.1khz instead of the lesser default which has given the clips a much better sound
. These new 4 clips sound pretty damn close to what it really sounds like, hope this helps you guys out that are considering this little mod
. I ended up removing the 2nd muffler all-together and putting in a straight pipe to route the exhaust out the back. Kept the stock tips so everything looks original hehehe
. Without further ado, here are the clips:
http://www.angelfire.com/linux/350z/...raightPipe.mp3 - This is a sound clip from inside the car during neutral revving
http://www.angelfire.com/linux/350z/...raightPipe.mp3 - This sound clip is of neutral revving around 30 feet away from the car
http://www.angelfire.com/linux/350z/...raightPipe.mp3 - This sound clip was recorded around 15 feet away from the car
http://www.angelfire.com/linux/350z/...raightPipe.mp3 - Here is the hardest clip to record of course! This is of the car accelerating from about 30 feet away.
Welp, those are all the clips. Hope you guys enjoy the extra grunt that is provided by removing the 2nd muffler
. To each his/her own, night all & have a good memorial weekend!

I tried this the other day and found it to be a bit too loud for my taste BUT If u put back together the flanges while using something as a spacer you can make it quiter and as it becomes closer to being sealed the quieter it gets so that is somthing to play around with
I removed my muffler Friday night and put $7 worth of Autozone piping on it to make a downpipe off the rear flange. I must say, I Was rather impressed with the ease, weight of the muffler, and the new exhaust note. I like it, and will probably leave it this way for a while, till I do a full custom cat back.
Check out the video on this page, click on RUN4 for the best sound, the mic is attached to the rear license plate, so it didn't turn out the best, it over powers the mic a little, but this gets you a full gamout of the sound spectrum from idle through WOT.
