Ok I didn't quite understand what the op did here but before I even found this I had tried I myself and what I did was I unbolted the three bolts, used a screwdriver to space it and pull them off each other just enough to pu the two bolts on halfway then I put the ground on and then I connected it again so it was only a little gap in between and its got a mean sound idk but I'm broke and this was the way to go but I think u gotta watch with the police and stuff

I have spent the last few minutes trying to dig up some old photos, without too much luck.
You can sort of see my hack under the back of the car here, though not in great detail unfortunately

a bit better if you view the original sized photo

I decided to do this today out of pure curiosity. I must say, I love the sound. I love it so much, I am going to pay a exhaust shop to fab duel tips so it looks good and stock.
I had Rep HKS with test pipes and I started to hate it after a while. And I Only did it for the sound. But, now that I have the sound I am looking for I am going finish this setup off!
P.SP I love that license plate!!!

FYI, depending on the piping after the stock mid section, it will boom and sound like *** or maybe ok.
Having the gap between the mid and muffler as per the OP, helps a lot with the sound as some still goes through the muffler. However, better than stock it *may* be, but it still sounds like you've got a hole in the exhaust (yes i tried this)
