I put it in according to instructions now my car barely runs and it smells like fuel.
I sprayed it down with the oil and all, but most of it just dripped off.
Help!

check engine light on? none?
disconnect your battery cables, reset your puter.
check if there is oil in the maf sensor.
replace filter with old one.
connect cables. fire-it-up.
see if you get same symptoms.

I tried that other than putting the old one back in. PLease someone help me figure this out. I hope I haven't wrecked my engine.
If you didn't let the oil dry then it's probably your MAF sensor as gothchick pointed out.
You're supposed to clean it and let it dry, then reoil it and let it dry IIRC.

The thing I don't get is how the oil is supposed to soak through the plastic wrapper the filter is in?

So the box it came in soaked it up just fine?
