What are some of the pluses to getting an after market one?
does it change the sound of the car?
Reason Im asking is because I just got my invidia exhaust installed and was curious if there is any purpose to getting an aftermarket y pipe and or versions of this.

Better flow = more HP
Here's the thing - I used to have Nismo exhaust, and when I changed to HKS exhaust, I gained 10whp over Nismo. Now I'm back to Nismo with JIC Y-Pipe, which is freer flowing than OEM-like Nismo Y-Pipe, I gained 10whp OVER the HKS setup. This is with the tune of course.
It also alters the sound as well.

I appreciate the feedback guys. I always end up second guessing myself if I do things backwards...such as the invidia exhaust. I wasnt sure what upgrade was better to do first.

I just simply wanted to prove that aftermarket Y-Pipe with much straighter design(i.e. JIC) will gain you hp and back it up with my own experience.
Thanks for the 'ricer math' comment haha~
You're welcome.
Ok, NOW what you said makes sense - tuning. That's what got you the extra horsepower (which could have also been due to the different in conditions, dyno variables, etc), not the transitions you stated above. The Nismo y-pipe isn't too bad, but the JIC is better; one "flaw" is that the piping on the JIC is a tad bit bigger, so mismatch in the piping size does create a slight turbulence within the exhaust system.

Clearly, not everybody understands how gases work (and in turn, air flow within your exhaust system).
See my above post and try to understand it. If not, I think some sponsors here could explain it to you why, basically, changing out just the y-pipe (for whatever reason you're trying to justify in replacing it) is pointless (unless you have a lot of money to burn and have exhausted all other viable spending options).

You might want to consider the y-pipe of the 07/08 VQ35HR 350Z. I recently swapped one on to my 03 G35 was surprised by the "percieved" gain and improved driveability.
Here's the difference between the 03-06 VQ35DE y-pipe (left) and the 07/08 y-pipe (right):

Nope. No dynos. I've never had one done on my car either. All I know is the exhaust sounds better and driveability. I'm pretty critical of mods and this is one that does improve the way the car drives and fits like OEM since it is.
