You shouldn't get a CEL unless you actually damage the O2 sensor itself. I've done this with about 3 of my cars and I've never had a problem. I even passed emissions with my 1998 Cobra with gutted cats.

Hi all,
I may be thinking about doing the same but does anyone has any figures on gains from punching through the stock Nissan cats?
Since we have 2 cats on each pipe, how about gutting either one of it before or after the sensor. Will we see any gains while being "not as illegal" has gutting the entire thing?
Or I may be well better off paying for a set of test pipes?
All this asumming that I will still be on stock headers for a while.
Cheers!

After talking with my local performance shop and looking at the pipes, we left the smaller 1st cat on, and completely gutted the larger more restrictive 2nd cat, much like the hi-flow cat set ups. Also, where the 02 sensor is (after the 1st cat) will still read that there is a cat there so no CEL light.
The result was a lot better exhaust note and there was an increase in power. I eventually went to Kinetix Racing hi-flow cats and I wish I didn't, they gave me the same sound as my gutted ones and I noticed no more increase in power.
Now that I have the Kinetix on, I will be leaving them on. If anyone wants to keep their stock pipes as is, I am willing to sell my gutted ones.
Any resonance with the gutted cats or with the Kinetix?

a tiny bit from 2300-2000rpm but not in open air driving you would have to be in an enclosed area (tunnel, bridge, etc.). i had rt cats on and the had a ton of resonance (flutter) from 3k-2k on the downshift and were kinda raspy up top. on a scale of one to ten in terms of rasp/resonance/flutter i would give the rt cats a 5-6 and the stock gutted cats a 1-2.
