Scenario: happy with my exhaust setup, but the 4" tips are only like 2 inchs long, so it looks funky.

exhaust on my car is 3" OD Piping into 4" tips. I want to cut the tips off of my stock muffler (also 4", but I believe the OD piping is 2.25") and have them fabricated to fit my current setup, they look a lot better imo, twice as long.

Will this be a huge headache for the muffler/welder shop I take this to? Stupid idea, or can I make it work? Any idea on the amount of labor involved?

My uneducated guess is 2~hours. enlighten me / flame me!

Yeah you'd probably be better off buying new tips that way you'll be sure it'll work.

 

I am thinking you guys are absolutely right. I should find some specifically designed to fit 3" piping?

 

^ Buy new Tips you will be happy in the end that you did. And besides you can choose what ever size and shape.

 

I had this done on my RX-8 for $45 locally. I already had the stainless tips. The shop just cut off the old one and welded these on.

These are dual wall tips by DNX. (Made by a company I used to work for.) I'd like to get another set and put them on the Z. The knife edge angle tip just looks right without being ricer.



As for 3" inlet tips, dang! I'm not sure what you mean by 3" exhaust on your car. The OE system is not 3" anywhere. Most tips are between 2.25" and 2.5".

If you're mounting to the OE muffler, you won't have a problem on the driver's side. It's the passenger side that the pipe is super short. You can't go into the radius of the bend so the tip is pretty short.

I'll have to crawl under tomorrow and see if I can measure from the tangent point of the radius to the edge of the tip and see the max length possible. Without having stupid looking tips sticking out.

I have two or three other sets of tips on the shelf in the garage. One is 4" round with carbon fiber wrapping and knife edge tip. (No slant) Here's a pic of it. I have two. I was going to use them but I think it's too long on the pass side. It would be good for a custom setup.



I've got another pair of these but they aren't what I want either.

phreak, let me better explain - the aftermarket exhaust I have is 3" piping, I was saying I think stock is 2.25".

How much straight length do you have? Large ID tips are usually pretty long. If you can, go dual wall as they stay good looking for much longer. The air between the walls insulates the exhaust temp from gradually discoloring the outer wall of the tip.
