Default Test Pipe Gains?

Okay.. it's seems this week's buzz word on the Engine forum is "test pipes"

Wondering what sort of power gains people are seeing with test pipes they have put on their Zs. I'm sure it sounds better, but what sort of hp gains are you seeing with this mod?

I've heard it's more like 8-10hp. Just by looking at the dynos. The high flow cats seem to be making about 5hp and the test pipes a little more.

How about with a procharger? I would assume the HP would go up. Has anyone actually put on high flow cats or test pipes after the procharger?

anyone have a clip of what these sound like with stock exhaust?

Im definetly thinking of making this my next mod (first performance mod really). But I want to make sure it sounds good too.

Ive heard a 10HP gain and for 250 bucks i dont think you can beat that with a stick!
thinking after that im doing a Crawford plenum to get some extra breathing on the intake side.

With a procharger I would go after the 2.5" one. 2.25" should be great for NA, but with FI, you would want the larger diameter. I'd say 10-15+hp easy with about 7psi.

if u spend $250, you're getting ripped off. These are plain pipes that are a few inches long!!!

I had them on my SE-R years ago. Paid cuple of $$ for the pipes & maybe $50 to get them welded properly.

The car sounded like absolute GARBAGE & from ALL the sound clips I have heard so far, the 350z sounds like GARBAGE as well with test pipes (in my opinion). It sounds like a cheap Civic exhaust (the raspiness, if thats the right word for it) The few HP is NOT woth the sacrifice of driving & having to put up with the sound.

One more thing, your exhaust tips will get dirtier, faster if that is an issue 2 u

Is this true? Seems like those who have posted here have said that the Z gets a throatier sound, especially with a good aftermarket exhaust, after adding test pipes.

the raspiness was noted upon removing resonators from the actual exhaust in a few cases, but I've seen no mention of raspiness with the test pipe replacement.

Default Test Pipes

I dyno'ed 7.5 RWHP on the motor & over 12 RWHP on a "big shot" of N20. I'm okay with the sound , probably because I already had Nismo Headers & Stillen exhaust .

i don't care which test pipe you buy but they def do make a difference....sorry to all of you but i am not going to dyno my car just with test pipes on...i would luv too beleive me...

anyways, i do have the 2.5' test pipes from Zred. i paid 250$..i don't feel ripped off either. i asked lsd for 2.5 and he said that it would have to cost more for the custom. i want 2.5' cuz i plan to get the TT.

sorry no sound clip either...don't have the toys to do that. all i can say is that it sounds IMO the exact same as stock....but the pipes enhances the same sound and loud enuff to tell a difference.

as i said in my other post...ppl who are not car savvy think i have an after mkt exhaust...just for those who don't want to get a new exhaust...

as for HP...these are straight pipes. replacing the cats..you are going to gain great hp regardless who makes them....

cheers

What scares me is the reported "tingy/raspy" sound many are getting with test pipe/borla combination.

In fact one member here (forgot who) mentioned he's considering swapping back his cats because the sound from 3-4k is really embarassing.

If zred's pipes prove to be different, i'll gladly pay a few bucks more for them.

No matter who makes the pipes is gonna be the same!

I'm gonna let you know a little secret... the raspy sound of the test pipes and borla TD is because of the H pipe and the unions of the system, if you are a little extreme like me, eliminate the H and put two straigth pipes in there and get all the unions welded. I know is a little extreme but I can garantee that the "tingy/raspy" is gonna go off!

The "test pipes" or "cat pipes" made a huge difference in performance in my brother's 350Z. RWHP gains? I don't really know, BUT I do know that the test pipes where good for 4 to 5 car lengths in a race that it used to be no more than two... (Next morning I was making my order…)They DO give huge amounts of power. About the RWHP gains, I have a very PERSONAL opinion that the 350Z and the dyno don't get along...

I thought the raspiness was supposed to be a GOOD thing??
I heard a M3 drive by the other day adn IT had to have test pipes on or LOng headers or free flow cats, BECAUSE it sounded like a race car (just with the vaolume turned slightly down). VERY VERY open sounding, almost like I said to myself, "ah, ha, that is what the honda guys are trying to acheive" It sounded good.

I dont think the 3.5L is going to sound anything like a 1.6L honda with coffe can exhaust, test pipes or not, does ANY ONE have a freakin sound clip or dyno???

btw, I heard 10ish WHP to??

well,..I've heard that the Test Pipes sound perfect w/o an aftermarket exhaust!
And the Resonator removed makes it a Bit extreme so I've heard,.so I put mine back on cuz My pipes are layin beside me waiting to go on!!!
haven't heard anything as far as Tingyness goes,...w/ my resonator off it got pretty damn nasty/tingy sounding--but it kinda sounded like a Weld is broke or something>?>
I DAMN HOPE the Cat pipes aren't like that!! these are bolt on-and no type of welding is needed--so it shouldn't sound that way!!???
by the way hp I've seen has been 9whp throughout powerband and 12whp @ redline!thats what I saw.
