What year is your car? I started off only wanting an exhaust. Before I knew it I had gotten a lot more than that. Within the past 3 weeks I went from just an exhaust to Injen CAI, HFC's, Stillen Headers, a second exhaust, and an Uprev Osiris Tune. My goal being to break 300HP which I'll hopefully do by the weekend.

If you had a good grip on what you wanted, you could do something cheaper than brand new. Especially if it's HKS etc.. But it's going to set you back at least $600+ for duals. maybe you can do something nice for $600-ish for a single. But I'd want mandral bents for the piping though. 304 or 316 for East coast. You could get away with aluminized on the West coast.
But it doesn't sound like you know enough to custom make one. So figure out what you want and find a system here used for sale.

Lou's Custom Exhaust.
Sounds like a real quality place.

IMO i think you should save up and get a brand name exhaust...yes they are a little expensive, but you pay for quality work.

Any of you guys that flamed the OP even bother to look at the website?
Seems decent to me. I'd ask for magnaflow products though.

me and my friend made a custom 3" for my Z, just did it tonight actually! its INSANE! I will post pics up tomorrow on my own post in the exhaust section. what we did was take a 10 foot section of pipe and 2 J bends. from the Y at the front we cut it off and welded the 3" right over it. single 3" pipe all the way to the back and custom Y after the sway bar at the back. Installation looks and is very professional, very basic design, flows GREAT and oh.. BWAAAHHHH

Same here. Started with an exhaust then got addicted to modding.
I've had my truck done by Lou's. I believe he specializes more in muscle and trucks than imports although, anyone from this area will tell you they're one of the best shops around for custom work. Make sure you go to the Reading location if you do go with them.
Keep in mind, they're going to weld the new system in as opposed to a bolt on aftermarket so, if you not happy with the custom exhaust it may cost you a lot more than you planned in the long run.

Just like everything...your exhaust is...your choice based on your budget and your wants. Any good custom exhaust shop can make you an exhaust as good as or better (performance & sound wise) as the expensive after market exhausts. Buy what you want. I have always put custom exhausts on my cars...and never regretted it. One word of advise is don't buy cheap mufflers and don't buy/use 3 inch piping for a custom dual exhaust.
One point to consider is this...you can buy 3 or 4 custom exhausts for the price of one of the $1,500 after market ones. That also means you can afford to experiment a little to find the right sound for you and probably have a few dollars left for other mods...Just my $.02.

If you need to finance parts then maybe you shouldn't be worrying so much about upgrading, and just enjoy your car. Or maybe you should have bought a cheaper car to mod. And honestly i really don't think you searched. There are more exhaust threads on this site then anything else!! You can't log on without someone doing an exhaust review!

Do some research as far as sound and goals. Since Lou's is custom and if you do in fact choose him you'll want to give him the correct diameter's. Do you want to go FI or stay NA? This will tell you and him what size to go with which is the most important factor her. whether 2.5", 2.75" or 3"
