Default exhaust break in period

Is there such a thing? I've heard at a couple places that a new exhaust takes a month or two to break in, and afterwords it will get a bit louder. Is this true? I just installed a Magnaflow y pipe back exhaust and I am not really happy with it because it sounds just like stock and is not noticeably louder.

I just ordered a Megan y pipe and I am hoping this will help with the sound??

Should I just get some test pipes or wait to see if it breaks in?

Usually it gets a bit louder. TP will make it much louder. Break in takes a few days, and it occurs because fiberglass packing in the exhaust resonator section is getting lose and shooting out.

have had 3 aftermarket systems installed, 1 of them on the Z (another new one inc this week), and I haven't noticed any drastic change throughout any break in period. what you hear is pretty damn close to what it will always sound like.

your experience may vary.

Break-in? Not that I know of. The exhaust has no moving parts.

I believe the break in myth is due to the ecu learning and adapting? not sure where it came from, but everyone seems to believe it.

If you really want to make it louder you can do the old school water trick. Go drive your car around for about 30 min so that the exhaust is hot. Then get a hose and spray water in the exhaust for a few seconds. What happens is the cold water shatters the hot packing material in the exhaust making it louder. It works a little bit each time so you might have to do it several times before you get the sound you are looking for but remember you cant go back, so dont overdo it.

An epic fread is in the making.

TO answer the OP once the muffler bearings break in you hear the true nature of the exhaust.

ya, my thoughts.

as it ages it will get louder because you lose exhaust packing.
