Side exhausts right after the headers?
Does anyone know ruffly how much back pressure the VQ35 needs? Would there be any gains from an exhaust set up with nothing but some good headers followed by side exhausts. Thats it, no cat back no nothing.

cat back is from the catalytic converters and back.. you can run straight pipes all the way back from the headers to the back.. and have it come out of where the stock exaust comes out.. that is straight back from the headers.. and not cat back since there are no cats..
if you have smaller diamater pipes you can do it..

No mufflers, just pipes from the headers to somewhere behind the front wheels.
This of course is not smog legal, but i was considering the fact that most ppl dont need max power 99% of the time and would like to pass emissions. Would it be possible to have a valve after the headers to direct exhaust through normaly (cat, pipes, mufflers) like stock and also be able to change to the side exhausts for racing?

if your Z is not turbo I highly not recomend this, you will lose a lot of power and not just 10 or 20% power maybe alot more, you are going to need the back pressure. it will be real loud, one thing you can do is, make one similar to the ford lighting set up, where the ext. will good back to the midle of the car and make a U turn back to the front wheel that should give you enough back pressure, and it might not be as loud as if you went right behind the front wheel, but if you are getting a turbo kit put on going right behind the front wheel will be great. for turbo, you want the less amout of back pressure as possible, and the car will still sound very nice not to loud as if it was NA with no ext.

Now, the flange is held on by three wing nuts. My mod to that would be to remove the wing nuts and put in there place three guide posts. Those posts would bend and join three inces above the flange. Between the joining of the posts and the flange would be a adjustable spring assembly. Once in place, you would dial in the spring so that it would only open when the exhaust pressure is high enough. In other words, go to WOT and the pressure would be high enough to open the cut outs. Not at WOT? The pressure would be lower and the cut-out would not open. The exhaust would exit through the normal method.
I have never seen this before (I CALL PATENT), so I am not sure if it would even work. However, it seems better than the summit piece and better than an electronic control. Essentially, it opens when needed most and otherwise remains closed.

I was thinking someone might wanted to add something like that Summit Exhaust Cutout with their Procharger or TT. Would it help in any type of FI or just turbos? Either way, I still htink its a good option for alot of power for very few bucks. It just has to open at WOT or at least after ~5000 rpms in 2nd gear?

putting out the side-pipe will use little space, but I'm afraid that the car will not only be street illegal, but sound pretty awful

i remember seeing a pic of a 350z "race car" and it had 2 smal exaust pipes on the back.. maybe 2.25" each one...
my guess is they ran header back no mufler etc...

My cousin had a "cutout" like the one shown in the Summit ad and it sounded awesome when revving but he lost MAJOR power taking off. I feel like it will only work on TURBO cars since the turbo makes its own backpressure. Also, my cousin's car was an 89 Firebird with a built 350 V8 so of course it sounded good. The Z would sound unbelievably raspy IMO. If you feel inclined to do the side exit exhaust then at least bring the pipes out in front of the rear wheels. Protect the body with some sort of heat shield though.

wouldnt having a valve decrease hp becuase of all the extra piping? if you wanted to just run sleep, detach the from the headers all the time and smog time reattach it. beside smog doesnt come up that often so when you need to smog just put the OEM exhaust and cats back on for smog or wait 30 years for it to be automatically passed
Our very first exhaust we ran was a sid exit right behind the drivers door. When we switched to a dual out the back it felt like we def had some gains............not to mention no more flatened exhaust...you will kill it on curbs.
