Default question for those with TEST PIPES

I just installed mine, it sounds good, BUT at the 3K-4k mark it gets raspy, kind of like a Honda with exhaust, well maybe NOT really, but it is raspy.

I am not sure if I like that sound or not,

question, DOES the raspyness go DOWN with time, or do you get used to it, or what is your opinion of how it sounds??

btw, My engine is stock besides the test pipes

I was thinking about getting these too. You have the stock exhaust? Is it just kinda raspy or is it loud as hell? I had an off road x-pipe and exhaust on my c5 and I ended up getting hi-flo cats because it was just too much with no cats and I think that I have a high thresh hold for this sort of thing. If you have a way to do a sound clip easily that would be awesome.

I hate the raspiness!! The sound would be perfect if that raspiness went away. I have the Borla + Kinetix combo.

It's driving me nuts!!

I don't have a way to do a sound clip.

the raspiness is only there under WOT for about a few seconds, but that is enuf to wonder if I really like it or not.

yes, stock exhaust

I have the raspiness as well but I have noticed it goes away once my pipes are hot. (Mines Test Pipes) It is the worst when the exhaust is cold.

I just noticed that someone has sound clips on another post for a G35. I want to do the borla true dual at some point but I was hoping the test pipes would tie me over for now since they are about 1/4 the cost.Link to Post
I guess I could get the test pipes and they would force me to do the exhaust sooner... hmm...

I just installed my LSD test pipes and Borla exhaust yesterday morning, took it out tonight for a good ride, I don't like the new sound I love it. Can't wait for the LSD plenum and a decent/worthwhile ECU.

That raspy sound is whats kept me from getting these pipes. I doubt it'll change. Doesn't seem like there's much 'breaking in' that can be done with a short steel tube.

How about smell?

Yeah, that's my post. The sound on my G35 hasn't changed at all after "breaking in" the test pipes. It's still raspy from 3-4k at half throttle or more. I personally don't like the raspiness either and am looking at putting in a different resonator. The sound isn't too much louder inside the cabin with the windows up, but it's definitely a lot louder outside the car. When I hear my wife drive off, it seems to be at least 50% louder. The raspiness doesn't seem to be as noticable from outside the car, but then again when my wife drives it, she's not taking off at over half throttle either...

My car does still stink, but it's really only noticable if you've been sitting in one spot for a while. Basically as soon as I pull in the garage, I kill the car.

I'll post sound clips as soon as I do the resonator as well.

I am going to put in a straight through resonator... probably 15" long, in place of the stock resonator before the muffler. The stock resonator is just a baffled version with no packing material. I hope it will make a difference. I desire an equally loud exhaust as my current setup with stock muffler and test pipes, but something less raspy and maybe slightly deeper as well. I'm hoping to hit the jackpot with this resonator, but most likely will still be disappointed. I'll post sound clips as soon as I get it done.

Cool thanks for the update. I will be looking forward to those sound files as I hope this works out as well. I just ordered the Borla True Dual and I am in the process of getting a test pipe from a forum member that is getting long tubes. I was going to get a CAI but after all I read here it sounded like they really don't add any hp just sound and look nice. I guess next on the list is the Crawford plenum since it seems to make power and would be great with an ATI which is my long term goal. Thanks again for the sound files they sold me on this setup.

Pretty much any exhaust shop could do it. Right now, I'm debating on whether to weld it into the exhaust or reflange the stock exhaust and make a resonator that would just bolt into place. That way, I could easily go back to stock if I didn't like how it turned out.
