Default Nismo CAI - Messed up MAF

So on Saturday when I was driving the Z I came to a red light. Pulling out, I hammered the gas 1, 2, and then the car died and would not start back up. I ended up getting it towed to the garage.

I got a call from them telling me that my Nismo CAI, the paint was peeling on the inside and ruined my MAS causing the car not to run. They ended up replacing my MAS.

Has anyone else heard of the Nismo CAI causing this problem? It seems to me like this should not happen. Especially a product from Nissan.

I need to replace my CAI now and I'm not sure if I should put the factory intake back on or buy another CAI from a different company.

Oh btw, $550 to fix it at the garage. Seems a little steep but what can you do.

My Nismo CAI is NOT painted on the inside, there is supposed to be 1 of you born every minute. Why not take of the air filter and see for yourself, victim....

Now you at least have some evidence for your fight with the friendly garage.

A Sheriff's officer broke my Nismo CAI near where the bypass valve is without me knowing till the next day (long story). Gunned 1st, 2nd and my car died. I kept trying to turn it on, but it would just rev up on its own like a possesed ****. Some broken pieces were getting sucked in and getting stuck. I ended up towing it back home and removed the intake manifold the next day to clean it up, cleaned the MAF sensor, and cleaned the intake and replaced the bypass valve. All good afterwards. I have no idea how you're getting paint peeling off.. From where? What area? I'd get a Stillen w/ heat shield or leave it stock if I cared about my car with just a drop-in.

Lets see some pics, this sounds strange and unlikely.

BTW it's called a MAF sensor.

From the tech at the garage....

Found paint chips sucked into the MAF sensor causing false airflow readings and vehicle will not stay running.

Replaced MAF sensor and cleaned up the inside of the CAI. He advised replacing the CAI.

"Gunned 1st, 2nd and my car died." Exactly what happened to me.

Kinda sounds like they just found something to blame it on. I would think that you should be fine going forward. If possible, post some pics of the intake.

I will get some pictures this weekend when I take the CAI off. I told them I would take care of the intake cause they wanted to much $$$$.

I drove it home with the old CAI on it, they told me just not to hammer the gas and it should be ok to drive home so that is what I did.

I guess I probably plan on just putting the original one back on, but I will def. get some pictures and take a look at it for myself.

The end that was peeling was the end towards the air filter. Seems **** poor to me.

I learn neew things each day, my Nismo CAI is not painted on the inside, it is just the silver color. How do you spose they painted the inside of the CAI to get full paint coverage??? Did the MAF look like it is brand new???

The MAF sensor did look new and it is a good question on why the inside of the CAI would be painted. Front what I saw, it doesn't look like the whole thing is painted, it was worse on the end where the air filter went.

I know it won't do me any good, but I want to get this pictures over to Nissan/NISMO so they can see for themselves.

Here is a pic I grabbed off the net. I am going to change out my air filter this weekend and I will shoot a pic of mine for comparison. At least the mechanic sounds honest in this situation. I wonder what NISMO will say about the paint on the inside of the tube? I can really see no reason to paint aluminum, it's not like it is going to rust or corrode.

^ That pic you posted looks like it has overspray around the edges of the tube.

OP....thanks for posting pics. Maybe you have a fake NISMO intake? Did you buy it used?
